I have enabled PIC on my OCS deployment and i seem to have a few difficulties understanding / adding contacts (with Live messenger users).
These are the scenarios where we have problems:
Scenario 1
- If i am in live messenger and i invite someone to my contacts list who is in the OCS system, should the OCS user receive an invitation?
.... I cant seem to get the presence of the OCS users in my IM list for new contacts. However, occasionally we get the presence successfully when we do this. and once that happens..... the OCS the presence will work for that contact forever more with no issues.Scenario 2
- If i am in OCS and i invite a LIVE MESSENGER user to im contacts list should the live messenger user receive an INVITE prompt?
....I find when i invite a user (who is in IM) from OCS the IM user gets receives no prompt or invite. Though sometimes the IM user will just appear in the OCS contacts list sometimes with or sometimes w/o presence even though the IM user is definitely logged in and with 'Available' Presence. its seems to be sporadic or inconsistent. We also get this error which im not sure is related:
A significant number of connection failures have occurred with remote server federation.messenger.msn.com IP 64.4.50.110. There have been 96 failures in the last 187 minutes. There have been a total of 3401 failures.
The specific failure types and their counts are identified below.
Instance count - Failure Type
1567 80072746
1834 80072745
This can be due to credential issues, DNS, firewalls or proxies. The specific failure types above should identify the problem.Last thing: I have registered the domain with microsoft, I have OCS 2007 R2 deployment. AOL in pic doesnt seem to be a problem and works the way we expect it to.
Thanks

soleved the issue.
turns out PIC traffic was going via im logic which was changing the behaviour. Updated DNS on the FE and edge server for messenger.hotmail.com etc... and the problems went aaway..
i suggest you add a custom DNS and bypass im logic if you are going to install an FE.
