OK i had a look at your autodicover config.

Have you configured External web services URL? you need to configure it in the topology builder.

1. Open topology builder.

2 Select your Lync pool/Server and edit

3. Enter external webservices URL.

4. Publish the topology

5 add TMG rule for the external web services URL.

So the OCS test page, option 4, mobility autodiscover test, passes.... but we still can't connect from iPhone. I had read about the need to download and install the certificate to iOS devices, and have done that. Works internally.

The external web services URL is set to:

lyncdiscover.ourdomain.com

When I go to https://lyncdiscover.ourdomain.com/autodiscover/autodiscoverservice.svc/root

The root file downloaded contains:

The only thing about our installation that is a bit different than perhaps other companies is that our internal domain name does not match our main SMTP/external domain name.

In other words, I login to my domain internally using firstname.lastname@internaldomainname.local and use that account to access Lync internally.

My main SMTP address and my company's public domain is firstname.lastname@publicdomainname.com. That is where people send me email and that is how I log into OWA, for example. Therefore for my Lync user account, I have both firstname.lastname@internaldomainname.local and firstname.lastname@publicdomainname.com as SIPs. For the TMG configuration, and for the external URL, and for the DNS entries, we are all using the publicdomainname.com. And when I try to login externally I am using that domain on the client login.

I have both internaldomainname.local and publicdomainname.com entered as valid SIPs on the FE server configuration. If I was to try logging into Lync externally using firstname.lastname@internaldomainname.local it obviously wouldn't work because there isn't any DNS for that, TMG rule, etc. We don't want to put that domain on the internet. Since this somewhat split setup works for Exchange internally and OWA externally I assume it should work for Lync?

Does that make sense?

Sharon yes I've looked at that document. Our internal and external are not pointed to the same FQDN. And we are using that type of delegation.

Let me point out one other thing... if a user tries to login to the Lync client on their PC using firstname.lastname@publicdomainname.com it doesn't work. I'm not sure but I think it should. Perhaps this isn't so much a mobility issue as an issue with having two domains?

You need to change your external webservices URL.

This can not be the same as the URL for lyncdiscover. So basically setup a new external webservice URL in topology builder. publish the topology and then make sure your certificate have the web services name in it. publish the rule in TMG.

That is correct. I usually setup the name ext.domain.com and use that.

The IP can be the same and you can even use the same TMG rule with that domain but you will need to add the SAN name to the certificate.

You need to change your external webservices URL, in topology builder, publish the topology and make sure your certificate have the name in it, this is an example for the Web External Services URL:

extweb.yourdomain.com

and additionally, you need to set the Mobility URL to autodiscover.yourdomain.com

both of those can point to the same external IP in DNS, but you must to have a rule in TMG for each one.

We changed the external URL to lync.domain.com, and I re-ran the certificate request and assigning 'tool' in Lync. I'm pretty sure I had it correct before, but made sure all of the SAN names were in there again. This is what the OCS test says now:

It did not re-install the Mobility pieces. If the URL is baked into the installation then perhaps I would have to Uninstall Mobility and re-run bootstrapper. Are we sure that's necessary?

OK then i suggest that you add a rule in TMG allowing lyncdiscover using HTTP as that is the most likley cause of failiure you do not need to allow lync.domain.com go through http
