I've used a hotmail account for a long time, but now I wanted to switch to gmail instead. To be able to transfer my old e-mails from the hotmail account to the gmail account I found out that I could use Outlook.
I opened Outlook 2010 (for the first time as I've never used it before) and was asked to add an e-mail adress. I first added my hotmail account and saw that all my e-mails now also were to find in Outlook (as expected). Then I added my new gmail account.
To transfer the e-mails from hotmail to gmail, I tried to drag the folders (the folders I had created myself in hotmail) from the hotmail section to the gmail section. They were all placed under the [Gmail] folder and were called [Gmail]/"Folder name" on default. However, when I then opened these folders that had been moved to the gmail section, they were all empty; the e-mails had disappeared. I tried to search for some of them, but with no result. I dragged all the folders (now empty) back to the hotmail section, but they were still empty.
Thus, is there any way that these e-mails can be recovered?
When I look at account information, it seems that the hotmail account is labeled MAPI, whereas the gmail account is labeled IMAP/SMTP. I don't know if this matters or not, but upon trying to search for the problem, IMAP was mentionned several times.

When dealing with Outlook or other email applications, I like to make sure the "Leave a copy of the email on the server" option is always checked for all accounts. This way if Office eats an email, I still have a backup online.
Can you still access those missing emails via the Hotmail web interface, or are they gone from there too? Check the trash folder as well!
Most email providers keep backups, but are often reluctant when it comes to restoring them. Get in contact with Hotmail support as soon as possible. Instructions are on eHow, you will probably have to start at step 4:

I looked through my Hotmail account and tried to "recover deleted messages", but only some of the emails I had myself deleted some time ago showed up.
I have just sent a message to Hotmail support, so I hope that they will be able to solve the problem!
As for the "Leave a copy of the email on the server" option, I'm unable to find it. I read it should be under File / Account Settings / Change / More Settings, but I cannot seem to find the Change button. Upon clicking Account Settings, it opens a new window with many tabs. Several of these include a Change button, but none seem to have the "Leave a copy of the email on the server" option.
