I had Microsoft Word Starter 2010 on my computer when I bought it but I had the same problem (it wouldn't open anymore).
I had to restore my computer to its "out of box" state:
control panel
system and security
action center
restore computer to an earlier time
advanced recovery methods
system recovery
because of an unrelated issue, and when I started using my computer again, I was able to use Microsoft Word Starter again. I know this is a drastic method, but if all else fails, use prayer. It worked for me! (God is now my new BFF :)
