Office Communicator without Office Communications Server

- Can you use Office Communicator without an Office Communications Server? The information on the website seems to infer you can but I can't figure out how to do it. I want to test it out with one of my colleagues in another country as an alternative to skype. Realistically I'd just like to be able to trial it without commissioning a trial OCS.
