Answered Looking at Sharepoint Online for the following situation

The majority of files that we work with are Adobe InDesign files that link to image files: JPG or other Adobe product files (Photoshop, Ilustrator).

Our project sizes vary drastically, from 2MB all the way to 50MB, but the average is probably between 10-20 MB; and my major concern is the amount of time it would take for a designer to check out a project to work on.  The hope of mine is that the designer only needs to download the InDesign file and be able to link to all the images still on the server. InDesign files themselves range from less than 1 MB to about 5 MB.

Has anyone had experience with this application?

First, let me preface this reply with the comment that I don't have any experience with Adobe InDesign.

That said, if all your designers are editing is the InDesign file itself (not changing the 50mb PSD file for example) then you should be able to work the way you describe. However, I assume you would want all files to require checkout for changes. Correct? Ultimately you will need to download any file to edit it.

I suggest, if you haven't already, sign up for the free trial and try out your scenario.

Without working with the actual application it would be difficult to guage your user experience with Online Services.  I can tell you that I have many different companies using large files off the site and as long as the internet connection is decent, I haven't had complaints.  The best way to determine if it will work for you is to open up a trial account and check it out.  It's free and you can test it out and see if the user experience fits your needs.
