Edit Microsoft access database online in Microsoft Sharepoint Online
- Hello,
I have uploaded a few Microsoft Access databases in Microsoft Sharepoint Online. When I select these databases in Sharepoint, it gives me two options: I can view the database online or I can modify it. To modify the database I first have to download it, modify it on my computer and then export it again to Sharepoint. This takes a lot of time. Isn't there a way to modify the database online at Sharepoint and then save it?
Thanks in advance,

- Hi jw. SharePoint Online does not have the concept of linked SQL tables. However, there is nothing stopping you from having those linked SQL tables in your Access database running alongside the linked SharePoint Online tables.
This is possible because you can selectively link an Access table to a SharePoint Online list.
Do you have a specific business scenario in mind?

- Hi Ricardo. Have you tried the Access/SharePoint synchronisation feature? This will give you a completely different way of working which might suit your needs better.
In this mode, all your Access tables are stored as SharePoint lists. Your local Access database maintains links from the tables to the remote SharePoint lists: anytime you change a row in the local table the change gets pushed up in to the SharePoint list and vice versa.
Have a look at the External Data ribbon in Access; this has options to push your existing database up in to SharePoint or connect your database to an existing SharePoint list.
Hope this helps.

http://twitter.com/mjthinkscape - Hi Myles,
Do you know if this will work with access databases that have linked tables to SQL?
We have some Access databases that have the data stored in linked SQL tables & Views. I have a feeling that it is not supported yet though, but may be in 2010.
Thanks,

- I should clarify that you can set up a datasource using SharePoint Designer to access a SQL database. But that has no relationship to a linked SQL table in Access.

Myles - Thanks Myles,
We just have some access databases currently running through citrix. If I could get them running through SharePoint instead, that would be great.
I'll have a look at setting up some datasources within Designer.
I saw through the following video that composites will be available in SharePoint 2010 and having a link between SharePoint and SQl directly will be available. But i am not sure if this will be available in BPOS.

jw. - Hi jw. Thanks for that link... wow, the connectivity to SQL looks brilliant. I hope that makes it in to SharePoint Online.
Good luck with SharePoint Designer datasources, I hope it works out for you.

Myles
