Answered User of Avicode prior to MS Acquisition

    Hi,

We have used Avicode for many years.  We are not users of System Center and I'm working out with Microsoft what is required from a licensing perspective to keep using the Avicode agents we own.  My concern now is related to what our long term future would be.

Will I need to install a full System Center instance on a new server to keep using Avicode?  I really have not investigated what that would entail.  Today we just have a single server running the SEViewer web site and a database to store the Avicode event records.

Will I easily be able to increase the # of servers that we run Avicode on or will it be very expensive to add a server if I'm buying the full system center suite for each one.

I searched for this and was not able to turn up any blogs with a review of what the dev manager experience is with all of the acquisition changes.

    Hello Greg,

I do not think I know the correct answer right now, but I asked internally about this and I have possibility to receive an answer this week.

All I know about this situation is the information from http://www.microsoft.com/pathways/avicode FAQ:

    1. Which AVIcode customers qualify to receive the System Center Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD) Grant Offer for?

AVIcode customers with perpetual software licenses and active AVIcode maintenance and/or support agreement(s) in place as of October 5th, 2010 will be offered a grant of System Center SMSD licenses to ease the transition to licensing AVIcode capabilities in connection with the System Center server management suite offerings.

Grant letters with additional details will be distributed to qualifying customers mid-January 2011.

    2. Can my customer assign the granted AVIcode licenses to servers other than those servers licensed with the SMSE, SMSD, CIS Suite Enterprise, or CIS Suite Datacenter?

No, the granted AVIcode licenses must be assigned to the same server as the qualifying Microsoft licenses. Customers may not manage servers with AVIcode that are not licensed with SMSE, SMSD, CIS Suite Enterprise or CIS Suite Datacenter. (Note, this restriction does not apply to customers who bought AVIcode from AVIcode, Inc. prior to Microsoft’s purchase of the company).

    3. Will existing AVIcode customers be granted any System Center licenses?

Yes, AVIcode customers with active software maintenance agreements (with AVIcode, Inc.) as of October 5th, 2010 will be offered a grant of SMSD licenses equal in value to the customer’s life-to-date purchases of AVIcode software licenses and support. The SMSD grant to qualifying AVIcode customers is intended to recognize customers’ investment in AVIcode and ease the transition to licensing version 5.7 and future versions of AVIcode. Within one year of the grant offer customers need to add Software Assurance to the licenses they wish to accept. Customers may accept a subset of the SMSD licenses offered to them. Acceptance of the SMSD grant does not revoke or modify any use rights associated with the customer’s existing AVIcode licenses. Licenses may be accepted on an existing VL agreement

I hope to update you soon with the information regarding your question.

    Hello Greg,

You can obtain information about pricing and licensing here: http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/pricing-licensing.aspx
As existing AVIcode user by October 5th you should receive some offer for System Center Licenses:  http://www.microsoft.com/pathways/avicode (or you can refer to my post above)

And the common information about AVicode in SC you can find here: http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/avicode.aspx

I guess this should help you to find out the pricing and the current situation around your licenses.

No System Center is not required to install and run AVIcode 5.7 and actually the Suite pricing seems to be much less than AVIcode ever was individually. Each server will need a suite license to be able to run AVIcode as a licensing tool not as a technical requirement.

Hope it helps, you MSFT sales rep should be able to respond directly to pricing.
