At my company I have SCOM 2007 R2 with CU5 installed with 2 different management groups which are using a shared data warehouse. I'm plannning the upgrade to SCOM 2012.

My question: do I need to upgrade both management groups at the same time or is it possible that the data warehouse runs on SCOM2012 for one management group and SCOM 2007 on the 2nd management group.

You will have to upgrade both management groups at the same time because during the upgrade process, SCOM 2007 databases are upgraded to the SCOM 2012 release version.

If you force SCOM 2007 R2 to use the upgraded shared data warehouse, you will get errors and most likely it will corrupt the database.

Meanwhile we tested it at the company and the upgrade of both management groups does not need to be executed at the same time. The new rpeosrting site and the old reporting site keeps on running. This was confirmed be Microsoft as a valid upgared scenario.
