What Happens To POP3 Email Currently In Outlook 2007 If Move To Hosted Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 9?

I have a friend who is thinking of moving to a hosted Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 9 solution for the two email accounts on his domain. Both currently come down in to Outlook 2007 using POP3.

His PST file is currently between 3 and 4GB in size and the hosted solution has a max size per user (email account) of 2GB.

If he moves to the hosted solution will he be able to somehow move his Calendar and Contacts from Outlok 2007 into Exchange 2007?

Will he be able to keep his email (which is the bulk of the 3-4GB) in Outlook but stop it from being sucked up into Exchange or would it be better to save it in a PST file which (presumably?) he will be able to open and view whenever he wishes?

Nothing will happen to it. All the data will remain in his pst-file. He can move all the data that he wants to have available on-line from the pst-file to the Exchange mailbox. The rest can be left in the pst-file as an archive.

Contacts and Calendar items can be move as well. Calendar items are best moved in a list view such as the By Category or All Appointments view (View-> Current View).

When he has the Exchange mailbox set as the default data store in Outlook (via Account Settings-> tab Data Files) then all new mails, contacts and calendar items will automatically be created there.

Before signing up with this ISP, you might want to ask why they are so behind with updating Exchange (SP3 RU7 is the current release of Exchange 2007) and when they will migrate to Exchange 2010. Otherwise I'd choose a different ISP.

So when he sets the Exchange mailbox as the default data store the PST file will remain open (or can be reopend) so he can copy everything over?

Great point about the migration, he is already with the ISP (1&1 in the UK) and I've just asked the question on his behalf.

Will it be possible for him to have what will presumably be two Exchange mailboxes open in Outlook 2007, one for each of his email addresses?

PST is a local data file and it could be opened by Outlook anytime.

If you want to setup up two Exchange account in Outlook 2007, you may try:

    1. Create anther Outlook profile to setup second Exchange account.
    2. Set the second mailbox as the delegate.
    3. Add the second mailbox as the additional mailbox.

    Hope this helps.

    Sorry for the delay Tony.

Both your answers are enough for now. I'm not sure how you do steps 2 and 3 in your reply above but if my friend decides to go ahead I'll re-post for clarification.

Thanks again to you and Roady.
