when the user try to update the Generic recource from plan and want to assign another one enterprise resource to the task and remove the generic resource from that task.

    the Info message is displayed:

    Unknown Resource
The name you entered is invalid.
The name must be an enterprise resource assigned to this project, or the project owner.

    Hi John--

You can replace the Generic resource with an enterprise resource using the MS project. You may not be able to replace by Task basis.
    Here is the detailed article:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/add-resources-to-your-project-HA010377762.aspx

When you're ready to replace generic resources with actual enterprise resources, you can use the Build Team dialog box again from, MS project. You can also use the Resource Substitution wizard. Once you  replace generic resource with actual enterprise resource, the tasks wherever the generic resource was assigned to the tasks, the enterprise resource will have those tasks assigned.

    Does that help?
