I am installing SP2010 Beta on Windows 7 following the guidelines by Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869(office.14).aspx).   Everything went fine until the running of the config wizard.

During step 8 of the config wizard I am getting this error:

     Failed to create sample data.
An exception of type Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileException was thrown.  Additional exception information: Unrecognized attribute 'allowInsecureTransport'. Note that attribute names are case-sensitive. (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WebClients\Profile\client.config line 56)

I have seen a few people report this so far, but no real solution on how to resolve.   Any ideas?

I got the same error. Answer here:
    http://mphacker.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!8040CC624DDC5404!790.entry

At least the Wizard has now completed...
    (now for some more testing)

    Update:
The above worked, at least for now. (I did a Stand alone install) When the browser opened to create the first site the OK button would not work due a JavaScript error. I disabled Internet Explorer Enhanced Security and was able to create the site.

LOL That is my blog post.  :-)    I saw a suggestion on Twitter and gave it a shot.  I can't take credit for the idea... I just don't remember who originally posted it on Twitter.  So far everything seems to work on Windows 7.   I am installing Office 2010 Beta and all of that jazz now.   Hope to get that back installed tonight too.

For some reason the first time I tried to install Office 2010 I got an error about a file being corrupt.   I installed SPD 2010 and that was fine.  Now trying Office 2010 again.  Hope I don't run into any more issues tonight.

You should not edit the XML file. Please wait for a few days to get the WCF fix for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2.

One place to make the edit:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WebClients\SearchService\client.config

    Otherwise Search does not work...

There is a KB patch linked from an MSDN article... but... it does not exist (yet?)

In the mean time... I have a demo tomorrow!    (I backed up the XML files!)

This is not specific to Windows 7 only.  I also get this problem when I try to create the User Profile service application on Windows 2008 R2

As mentioned, SharePoint will finish the install if you make the modification but Search will not return results.  Since I am on a single Win 7 system I do not have the user profile service running so I can't verify personally that it too has issues.

I find it hard to believe that not a single person at MSFT tried to install this beta on a clean install of Windows Server 2008 R2.  I mean... FOR REALZ???

Mike your blog post mentions an incoming hot fix -- does this mean there'll be a download/patch, and then all I need to do is re-run the configuration wizard?

     Answer

Internally we have the fix, but it is not released to public yet. It will be there in the coming days. I already blogged about it.

    Hi Jie,

Will a hotfix be available to Windows 7 as well? You mention Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in your blog post, not Windows 7. Or is there another fix for this for Windows 7?

    Thank you,
    Christian Fredh

It is the same one for Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows 7 and 2008 R2 share the same core (6.1), most of the time they can share the patch bits.
The file name would be Windows6.1-KB976462-x64.msu, I just tested it on my Windows 7 and it was successfuly applied.

    Hi,

Here's a bug I'd like to report: I tried to install the Sharepoint 2010 beta to Win2008R2 (has already SQL Server 2008 installed, 2 instances)

First I installed the prerequisites and restarted. Then started Sharepoint installation (stand-alone).

Installation went smoothly until the Sharepoint Products Configuration Wizard reported an "allowInsecureTransport" error.

    Any work-arounds for this one?

    Br,
    Tapani Talvitie

I thought I had a clean virgin 2008 R2 build too. SharePoint installs ok but no service applications can run, all get this too:-
    System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Unrecognized attribute 'allowInsecureTransport'

So did MS test on a clean 2008 R2 build. Come on you must have, please say yes. If it was a known issue it would have been cool of you to tell us.

Speaking of which is there a list of know issues yet?

The fix for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is now available per the details in the recent MS SharePoint Blog post. The files are located here.

Hmmm I rather think these posts were made after the event. First impressions count, even with a beta. I'm still suprised this wasn't picked up in testing.

Anyway the fix is out now, so lets not worry, thanks for quick response and fix.

    The issue has been resolve.

Microsoft has just posted an update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 that resolves this issue.  For me I stopped all SharePoint services, installed the hotfix, and then restarted the services.   Now search is working fine in my environment.   You can download the patch from here: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=23806

It is not a "fix" after we released SharePoint Beta. It was there long ago. The patch added a new mode "allowInsecureTransport" so SharePoint 2010 leveraged that. The name of "fix" mislead people. Problem was, when Beta was released, although the patch for 2008 was already out for months, the patch for R2 was still in testing process. Therefore, the patch did not make into pre-req installer. It will be in the pre-req installer by RTM.

That's a reasonable explanation, Jie.  I usually expect to have to patch some things in a beta.  That's why it's a beta.

    Thanks for the explanation Jie.
Stuff happens its how it get sorted that counts and I'm super impressed by the response from Microsoft on this one.

Im cool with the Beta thing too, But maybe a warning to back off installing on R2/win7 for a couple of days should have been more prominent :-)

    Hi Adam,

I am currently using the Windows7 Evaluation copy: Build 7068.winman.090321-1322 build; When I try to install this “Windows6.1-KB976462-x64.msu” fix I get the message that its not supported on my current operation system.

I have checked that I am using windows 7 64bit OS and package I am trying to install is also for 64bit OS, I think Microsoft has not allowed these quick fixes to be installed on their evaluation copies. Do you agree or not? or is there any other solution running your mind please do reply ASAP.

    Thanks,
    Matloob Ali Raza

I dont think that is RTM build which is why you are getting some incompatibility issues. I am afraid you need to install Windows 7 RTM version (Professional or Ultimate)

    Dear Jei Li,
I was not able to install the hotfix, It said it is not for this computer. I have installed windows 7 64 bit rc.

I believe you may be out of luck.  Microsoft usually does not provide hotfixes for beta or RC products.   This is because Windows 7 RC is not final code.   You will need to reinstall with Windows 7 RTM.

I was able to install share point but not able to install the patch, so I am getting unrecognized attribute error, when I am configuring share point. Therefore I need that patch to work on windows 7 RC so that I can work on share point.

I am trying both the ways on Windows 2008 R2 (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Evaluation copy.Build 7100) !!. i.e. Installing the WCF Hotfix KB976462https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=23806&wa=wsignin1.0 ) and removing the Attribute "allowInsecureTransport". Neither WCF Fix will install Nor removing the "allowInsecureTransport " attribute from client.config works :( simply stuck :( :( . Installing WCF Hotfix KB976462 simply says; "The Update is not applicable to your Computer". I have even tried stopping 2 SharePoint Services; SharePoint Foundation Search V4 and SharePoint Server Search 14

If you install MS SQL server 2008 latest cummulative updates prior running psconfig.exe then this issue seems to go away.
