QuestionRemove Sites In Category but make sure to keep the Site in SharePoint/MOSS

    Hello,

It looks like when I created Sites In Category that the sites are reflected in all other sites. I just want the one site that belongs to that Category to be visible. This has become very confusing to the end users.

Also, is there a way to make the top Category go to the main Site for that Category or have a Site under the Category go straight to the Site? The way it works now is I click on one of the sites below the Category that opens a page with the link for that Site.

    Hi DMC2,

From your thread, I feel you have some issue of using Site Directory and the corresponding web parts.

But I do not know what you have done and what is your requirement clearly. Could you please elaborate a bit?

Some snapshots are appreciated. If you do not know how to paste pictures in the forum, please upload them to the following workspace.

    Hi DMC2,

    Thanks for your cooperation.

I would like to share your issue first to let community members to understand  what happened there.

(I removed some sensitive data to keep your privacy, if you think rest of the information should not be available publicly, please feel free to let me know)

When I open the site I see this:

If I can't make the top level the active link I would at least like to be able to remove the other links that do not belong within this site.

For your issue, I do not know a way to convert the links in Categories to be active links, therefore, I would like to let you know how to remove the other links from a specific category.

    1.       Click View All Site Content (_layouts/viewlsts.aspx) link in the page.

    2.       Navigate to Sites list, you will find all the links are stored here.

    3.       Edit the links (Customer Care and Business Development in your issue) in the ECB dropdown menu.

    4.       Uncheck the Technology Infrastructure Group category for those links.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Hello Lambert,

I went the SITES tab and then VIEW ALL SITE CONTENT

Next I went the LIST SECTION and then SITES

On the next screen I have a pull down for each CATEGORY TITLE

    I then select EDIT ITEM

Under the EDIT ITEM under the LINK STATUS pull down

I have pull downs for each other LINK with no option to uncheck anything. It looks like below:

    LINK STATUS                      OK{in a pull down menu}

CATEGORY                         SITE{in a pull down menu}no option to remove or uncheck
CATEGORY                         SITE{in a pull down menu}no option to remove or uncheck
CATEGORY                         SITE{in a pull down menu}no option to remove or uncheck
CATEGORY                         SITE{in a pull down menu}no option to remove or uncheck

    Thx,

    Hi DMC2,

Firstly, could you please you use the correct way to Managing the Site Directory (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/CH100963401033.aspx)?

When you choose to create or edit the category, the type of the column should be Choice (menu to choose from), and it should be there when edit the items.

I am not quite sure what it looks like in your side, this is what I see from my local for your reference.

For further investigation, could you please upload some snapshots to the workspace?

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Hi Lambert,

The listing above was from the "Sites In Category"

I have tried everything and I still do not see how I can remove "Customer Care" & "Business Development" sites from the "Central Command" Category under the "Technology Infrastructure Group" Site.

    Thx,
    DMC2

    Hi DMC2,

I suppose you misconfigure the Category column and use Drop-Down Menu style.

Please follow the steps to change it to Checkboxes (allow multiple selections).

    1.       Click View All Site Content (_layouts/viewlsts.aspx) link in the page.

    2.       Navigate to Sites list, you will find all the links are stored here.

    3.       Click Settings > List Settings in the toolbar.

    4.       Choose the column you want to modify in Columns section.

    5.       In Edit Column, change the Display choices using from Drop-Down Menu to  Checkboxes (allow multiple selections).

    6.       Save the changes.

Then you could uncheck the category from the edit item page.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Hello Lambert,

I don't need to uncheck or remove a Category, I need to remove a site under the Catergory. See below:

    Site Directory

           Categories

    CAT1            CAT2            CAT3            CAT4

    Site A           Site A           Site A           Site A

    Site B           Site B           Site B           Site B

    Site C           Site C           Site C           Site C

    Site D           Site D           Site D           Site D

Select Site D under CAT2 and now we are in

    Sites In Category

Site D {From CAT2} “This is the Site I want in Here”

           Site C {from CAT1} I want to remove this

           Site A {From CAT3} I want to remove this

I hope this makes more sense as to what I need to remove.

    Thx,

    DMC2

    Hi DMC2,

The Category information stored in the Sites list.  The categories (CAT1,CAT2,CAT3,CAT4) are the Choice columns in the Sites list and the sub-categories are the choice values of the corresponding columns.

For each site links, they are a item of the Sites list, by checking or unchecking the choices, the links would be shown on the difference categories.

That is why I ask you to uncheck the choice to remove the site from the category.

Could you please have a try and let me know the results?

    Hello Lambert,

The only option I have to uncheck from CAT1 is the SITE A, SITE B, etc... under that Category, the sites I want to remove are from one of the other Categories and I don't have any options to remove them.

    Thx,

    DMC2
