site collection template
Shall I create a top intranet site collection with 1.publishing site with work flow or 2. a collaboration site?
Currently most intranet content only for displaying, viewed by employees.
But later, if I want to use more features,
Will the wikii or discussion board available if I use option 1?
And if I use publishing site template at beginning, can I later restore it to a collaboration site collection?
Just want to setup correctly at the beginning
Thanks

- Anna,
I am not sure why you'd want to convert a publishing site to a collaboration site. Technichally YES you can combine both feautres but my advice is DO NOT
A publishing site is something which restricts the rights of anonymous users by allowing them to only look at the content (just like a regular website) and not the MOSS 2007 application pages. That is not the case with a Collaboration site. Here all readers of the site will be able to view the application pages which i doubt is something that you might want.
The content in publishing site is viewed by readers only after it is published whereas even the intermediate drafts are viewed by users in Collaboration site.
General rule of thumb is Collaboration portal -> for an intranet divisional portal
Publishing portal -> for an Internet-facing site or a large intranet portal
So please make sure you understand the underlying advantages of both and what kind of viewing rights you would like your users to have.

- When you create a top level site you should choose the most appropriate template for what it will typically be used for. You can add other sites under it to add in features like wiki and blog. If its a heavy reads site with fairly static content, then a publishing type template may well be more appropriate. There are some good guides around on the various template types:http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/GetThePoint/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=65
RegardsJohn Timney - Hi Anna,
I suggest you start off with a Publishing site. It is advisable to create separate sites for Collaboration and Publishing under the site collection which will solve their own purpose. Since you mentioned that right now you just want the employees to view content its better to start off with a simple looking Publishing site which will make the end users comfortable and aware of sites and the purpose they solve. Sharpoint in my opinion is more of solving business needs and not IT needs....its important that we make the users happy right from user-friendliness, look and feel to easy learning curve. - Actually some one has already created an intranet collection under our internet publishing web site application(our company internet site to public) 2 months ago, although it's not open to employees yet. I think it may be better to setup a separate web application from internet web application..
So I created another new web appliction just for intranet.
Then I need to backup and restore the intranet collection from current web application to new application. But I found out the intranet collection he created was a publishing site. Since there are already some work done, and also it use a cusomized master page, the look and feel is very similar to our internet site. I don't really know how to restore a publishing site to a collaboration site.
And shall I leave it as it is now, - I mean within the same web application as internet site, and if in future if needed more collaboration, then I can backup and restore the site collection to a new collaboration site collection in a new web application.
I don't really how to do a convert from publishing site to collaboration site or vise versa if they has customized master pages?
Thanks - It would be better to create a seperate web application for an intranet site and leave the internet site as it is for security reasons.
if it is reader heavy and you dont want to deal with master pages then go ahead and create a new publishing site. Check this article for better understanding http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee413958.aspx and also the link John provided above. Thanks.
I think you suggested at last post may be a good idea. I will start from there, since now most of our contents are for viewing.
And later in the future we need we can create another collaboration portal in the new web application, or is there a way to convert a publishing site to collaboration portal?
can I also ask if creating a web application the common practice for a intranet url is: www.intranet.mycompany.com or www.mycomany.com/intranet?
Thanks- Anna,
