I have several Security Groups created in Active Directory (AD 2008)
I include these in Sharepoint 2007 to give permissions to users for Sites,List, etc.
This setup works perfectly, but now i have to rename a lot of AD groups.
To rename the AD groups are as easy as pie, but the problem is the new names are not reflected within Sharepoint.
I have found solution from MS, but its really outdated, and there is no updated version:
and on the other hand its not applicable on massive scales.
Does anybody come across such situation,
where the AD changes are not reflected in Sharepoint ?
I hope i will not have to re-create the groups from scratch and reassign them in SP one by one,
but i feel it is my destiny :(
Thank You !

Monday, June 06, 2011 11:22 AMThe names of the AD groups in SharePoint won't change, but they should still continue to work as they always have since SharePoint is really using the Security Identifier and not the name of the group. Its just that the display name of the group is added into SharePoint when the group is added rather than a link that would require going to AD every time you display the name. If you really need the names to match then you will need to either edit the display name in SharePoint or delete and re-create the reference to the group in SharePoint the way the KB article does.
