Profile Sync - Error 5553 and 7888
Hi,
I have been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks and tried a lot of suggestions on the web. Basically I am getting the errors before. A little information:
-Using SharePoint Server 2007 enterprise edition
-Has SP1 and the Infrastructure update in there
-below error occurs every hour for different sites (5553 & 7888)
-today I also started getting more access denied error messages. No passwords, accounts have been changed.
Here is what I have tried:
-tried clearing timer service cache
-I have followed suggestions in posts such as: http://vspug.com/rlangley/2007/10/10/failure-trying-to-sync/
and I have issued:
stsadm- o preparetomove -Site http://whatevertheguiltysiteis -OldContentDb <GUID of the contentdb listed in event log error>
and
stsadm -o sync -deleteolddatabases 0
the error goes for that site but then starts for another. Also, since I already have infrastructure update according to some posts I should not be doing above. I believe all I am doing is disabling sync on these sites so now the error does not happen.
What can be the cause of this access denied?
What service account does the profile sync operation use? is it the sharepoint timer service account?

Hi kb005,
Lots of errors are involved in this is issue and I could not simply indentify whether it is caused by SharePoint Timer Service account or other accounts.
I suggest you to reset all the service accounts following KB934838 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838) for a quick resolution.
Especially to the SharePoint Timer Service account and Shared Services Provider (SSP) service account.
Let me know the result if possible.

Can I provide any additional info that could help identify the underlying cause? What are some of the possibilities?
The user accounts or their passwords have not been changed since installation. I have read some posts that recommend doing service account updates in above KB only when required.
Thanks,
Kunal Hi Kunal,
Glad to know you would like to provide me more information for further troubleshooting your issue.
I understand that you have not changed the service account password for a long time, however, there is a possibility that a Password Policy forces current password to expired within a specific time.
If possible, please change all the service account following KB934838 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838) and verify it is helpful for your issue.
If the action is not helpful, please collect SPSReports on all of your servers that host SharePoint and send them to the workspace for further investigation (If you are not sure how to do that, please refer to steps at the end of the reply.)
Workspace URL: (https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/ChooseTransfer.aspx?key=9c771bce-784f-4acc-925a-05a9af92811e)
Workspace Password: -q8g{d@kX3MF]U
To capture SPSReports, please follow the steps:
1) Download the SPSReport tool from http://spsreport.codeplex.com/
2) Run the SPSReport.exe on the WFE and Application Server.
3) Choose option 3 (Full).
4) On your system a CAB file will be generated in the %systemroot%\SPSReports\Portal\rpt\Cab directory called %COMPUTERNAME%_SPSReports.CAB.
5) The CAB file will contain the reports generated by the SPS Reporting Tool.
6) Send the cab file to the workspace.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Thanks for the additional information. I will try to gather the information you have recommended. A couple of notes about the accounts/passwords:
They have not expired as I can login with them still. The other odd thing is these errors dont happen for all the sites. They happen for only 2 sites. There are probably 20 site collections in our farm. However the errors below are happening for only 2 sites.
The two sites are:
1) one particular say http://moss/siteX (not different in anyway from the others)
2) oddly its the ssp site. http://xxx:14429/ssp/admin
Error 5016:
Expiration Service for site http://xxx:14429/ssp/admin failed.
Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))

Error 3763:

Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))
Another Update:
I am not seeing the Profile Sync Error anymore. What I did was run the following commands:
stsadm -o preparetomove -contentdb SQLSERVER:DBNAME -site http://xxx
stsadm -o deletecontentdb -url http:/xxx -databaseserver SQLSERVER -databasename DBNAME
stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://xxx -databasename DBNAME -databaseserver SQLSERVER
Thanks,
Kunal - Hi Lambert,
Another question. Can I run the commands to reset service accounts and use the same service accounts? Corporate policy makes it a bit difficult to create new accounts...
Thanks,
Kunal Hi Kunal,
You could run the commands to reset service accounts and use the same service accounts.
I am afraid I could not find which account cause the “Access is denied” error in your issue.
I would like to ask two more questions to narrow down your issue.
1. Which content database does the http://moss/siteX belong to? is there any other site collections in the same content databases?
2. Does the web application hosts the http://moss/siteX associate with the http://xxx:14429/ssp/admin SSP? Is there any other web application under the same SSP?

Sincerely,Lambert QinPosting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.- Hi Lambert,
Here are answers to your questions
1) It belongs to a content db called WSS_Content_MOSS_X. There are other site collections on that content db
2) Yes there is only 1 SSP and yes this web app is associated with that SSP. That SSP has other web apps as well.
I am wondering if the timer service that encounters this error quits after the first site collection it sees this error in and does not attempt the same service on other site collections..not sure about the inner workings of these services.
Thanks,
Kunal Hi Kunal,
Thanks for your update.
Based on your updates, your issue is narrowed down to the specific site collection.
To be honest, I am not sure what are the Expiration Service, HoldProcessAndReport and Processing policy updates which are mentioned in logs.
So I could not give you further information on this.
I am not sure if resetting the service account helps for your issue. if not, could I know if recreating a SSP is acceptable?
If it is acceptable, please create a new SSP and change the association of the problematic web application which host the site collection to the new SSP.
After that, verify whether the issue error is existed on the new SSP.
Let me know the result if possible.
