Remove Sites In Category but make sure to keep the Site in SharePoint/MOSS

Hello,

It looks like when I created Sites In Category that the sites are reflected in all other sites. I just want the one site that belongs to that Category to be visible. This has become very confusing to the end users.

Also, is there a way to make the top Category go to the main Site for that Category or have a Site under the Category go straight to the Site? The way it works now is I click on one of the sites below the Category that opens a page with the link for that Site.

Sites or site collections?

Hi,

I am trying to get my head around what would be the best set up in regards to sites vs site collections for a new website I am working on.

Here's the deal: the company I work for has got multiple businesses, each business is working on multiple projects. For each project I need document libraries, teams of people working on them, accouncements, etc.

Now, from an access permission perspective, each business should see their own project information. They should also be able to create their own projects and assign Readers, Approvers and Contributors to these projects.

My experience with SharePoint is limited, but from what I have seen so far is that any changes I make to a group (adding/deleting users) seems to always affect the entire site collection, nut just a single site. So if I add somebody to the Readers group that that person is a reader for the whole site collection. Right?

If that is the case then the most logical conclusion for me would be to create a separate Site Collection per project? That way people can add/remove users independantly of the other projects. I cannot see any way of doing this if projects are Sites?

One of the problems I am facing is that you can only create site collections through the Central Admin. I don't want to give general users access to the Central Admin so they can create a new project. They should be able to just simple create a new project as if it was a folder.

Is that possible? Or am I going completely wrong somewhere?

Hi All - I have problem in setting Item level Permissions in the sharepoint List.

I have list with 100 items with 4 groups.

when 1 group of users login they should able to see only there items not all.

Example

Contacts List

Person 1 belongs to group1
Person 2 belongs to group2
Person 3 belongs to group3
Person 4 belongs to group4

If Person 1 Logins he shuld see only his contacts.

Please help me how to do it ,I did custom activity(Actions) using workflow but didn't work.

Hi All,

I have created Quick Launch items say it as Invoices, Customer Contracts and they will point to there respective webpages,when user click on any link it is going to the links. till this point is everything fine.

Question:

We have different Users type say it as : Sales Manager and Sales Reprasentative

Sales Manager can access Invoices and Customer Contracts

Sales Reprasentative can access only Invoices

Currently , All Quick launch items are displaying irrespective of user type. I don't want to display "Customer Contracts" quick launch item when a sales reprasentative will login.

How Can I set the permission on Quick launch items, so that the links will be displayed as per the user permission

Reinstall IIS Without breaking SharePoint

This is my configuration:
Win Server 2008,II7 and MOSS 2007.

Actually my ApplicationHost.config file is corrupted and i will have to Re-install IIS for the same.
Was just wondering if there are any steps i can follow to Reinstall IIS without breaking SharePoint, or else do i need to Uninstall and Reinstall sharepoint alog with IIS.

Create Site Collection - Items in lists or libraries say modified by system account

I have recently installed MOSS 2007 SP2 and created a 2 server farm. Both the SQL Server(2008) and web server machines are Windows 2008 machines. I did the install and configuration all using a farm account(SPFarm) which is a domain account and also an admin of the web server machine. This farm account also is used for the web application pool for the central admin IIS web site, the ssp admin IIS Site, and the web application for the site collections and sites I am creating in SharePoint.

After configuring, I added my personal domain account to the Farm Administrators group using Central Admin. This account is also an admin of both the web server and SQL Server machines.

When I log in to the Central Admin site using my personal domain account and create a new site collection(for example a Report Center), making myself the primary site collection administrator, it creates the site collection just fine. When I then navigate to the top level site of the site collection, select View All Site Content and then look at any of the items in the lists and libraries that have been created, they all say created by "system account". When I look at the system account is says that it is created by my personal domain account with a timestamp of the time I created the site collection.

I would have expected all the items in the lists and libraries to say modified by my personal domain account. When I then add or modify any of the items in the the lists or libraries, they then show up as being modified by my personal domain account.

Is this behavior normal or do I have something setup wrong?

WSS 3.0 SP2 Breaks Exchange 2010

Hello!

I have a freshly installed Server 2008 R2, with Exchange 2010, OWA, SSL working great. Access is at https://www.domain.com/owa.

I attempted to install WSS, and successfully did so and setup to http://www.domain.com, as I intend to run it publicly.

My issue, is that OWA/Activesync stopped working completely, while sharepoint ran flawlessly.

I don't even know where to begin, any help is appreciated.

Hello,

I've setup a DNS record to point to our SharePoint server and created a GPO to set this as the default home page. When users access this page when logged in to the domain they are prompted to authenticate. This also happens when opening any document that the enduser has access rights to. But when I change this to the server name in the URL they are not prompted to authenticate. How do I fix this as I would like everyone to use the http://Portal.xxxx.com URL.

Hi All,

In my production server, the moss version is 12.0.0.6421,

Where as on test server, the moss (moss trail for 180 days)version is 12.0.0.4518

I need to restore the old contentDB of production server to test server,
but when i try to attach through command line it shows error message:

Can't map sharepoint in explorer (map network drive)

Hi , i've finished installing sharepoint 2007 enterprise on a windows server 2003.

Next to this, I would like to map a network drive , more specific a URL.
But when using the explorer, using map network drive, or using the wizard to connect with http: sites, it doesn't work.
The you entered doesn't appear to be valid

My sharepoint is simply installed at http://localhost/sites/ddc

When I want to connect to another sharepoint site, which i have also done from my local desktop succesfully, the same issue happens.

Is there a specific service/setting in windows server 2003 or sharepoint which is required to enable this?

What are the files in the LogFiles directory

One of our sharepoint server drives is almost full, the folder is drive:\LogFiles\W3SVC1276519304. and I can see a lot of files in it. file name like ex091123.log.
It seems every day has a file. each file is half a gib.

What are these files, are they sharepoint log file or iis file, or others?
Is it safe I can delete some of the old date files? What will it affect?

MOSS 2007 + Server 2008 R2 + Sql Server 2008:Blank Page

I have just completed a MOSS 2007 SP1 install on my Server 2008 R2 System. Everything seemed to install correctly. When I go to the System Center Admin Page it gave me an HTTP 500 Cannot display Webpage. So I turned of the IE8 Setting for friendly error messages. The page now returns just a blank White Page.

Anybody know where to go from here? I am a novice and I know enough about Sharepoint and IIs to be dangerous

This happens sometimes when users are creating new site in Site Directory. Site creation is done by a custom webpart code. This web part saves site information in SharePoint list, Project Server, SQL. But when this error occurs, nothing is created, event viewer has this error. But it does not happen every time, the same users can get lucky in creating the site next time.

Configuring Incoming/Outgoing Mail in Sharepoint via Ipswitch Mail Server 8.10

I'm currently running a sharepoint server in a development lab and am having problems getting my email server (Ipswitch Mail Server 8.10) to relay the alerts. I'm told it can do this but I've had no luck. I've enabled SMTP, tried to follow technet postings, yet I'm no closer.

I've tried the following posts:

What it's come down to is that I can't get the virtual smtp server started to relay "any" mail because it says port 25 is already in use (Ipswitch Mail Server). If I move the mail to another server and configure the microsoft SMTP client to use 25, am I supposed to forward from port 25 (SMTP connector) to another box running my mail server to make way for SMTP to use port 25?

Best Practices Analyzer Error Concerning Central Site Admin & Timer Service Accounts...

I'm running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 in a simple single-server installation on a Windows Server 2003 Std operating system. My Microsoft Updates are current, including the WSS 3.0 SP1 (KB936988) and an update for the Windows Internal Database (KB921896).

The Windows SharePoint Services Administration service's Properties --> Logon tab shows the "Local System Account" in use there. The same tab for the Windows SharePoint Services Timer service shows it to be using the "NT Authority\NetworkService" account. The server's desktop logon is a domain user account with local administrator authority specific to that server.

An execution of the "Microsoft Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" produces one (1) error of severity level 1 that states --

"The same account that you use to run SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration must be configured as the SharePoint Timer Service. ... If the account that you are using to run SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration is the correct account, you can log on to the Web server where the SharePoint Timer Service [is?] running as the wrong account."

There is an STSADM command to change the user account for the Timer Service further down in the BPA's explanation. However, I see from another user's loosely similar situation ( http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30290687/whos-running-the-central.aspx ), that he had trouble reconnecting to other services afterwards. The Network Service account has an automatically generated password and the local System account has none if I am not mistaken.

The confusing grammar of the BPA aside, how can I tell which user account logon needs to be used with these services? Being new to WSS, why am I syncing the user account logons of these two services with STSADM instead of at the logon tab properties of the services themselves? I'm concerned about executing this command without being sure how to fall back with it.

I would appreciate any clarification and/or insight into this error and its correction you could share. Thanks.

I just created a web application for intranet.

Our current configuration is the internet and intranet site are both on the same MOSS 07 server. The internet url is www.mycomany.com

Currently the intranet is httP://sharepoint:2010

What steps do I need to do in central admin and iis now in order for the URL be www.intranet.mycompany.com (not sure if need the www.)

New Users Getting 403 Forbidden Error

Hello,

We have a Sharepoint 2007 server that has been active for almost 2 years. There are multiple sites on it. One of the sites - APP - has six subsites. Permissions are set via the three standard groups - Visitors, Members and Owners. Any users in one of those group now can access the top level site (http://server/APP). If I add a new user to any of those groups, when they try to access the main page (APP/default.aspx) they get the 403 FORBIDDEN error. However, if they try to access one of the subsites directly (APP/Site1/default.aspx) they have no problem and get into the site.

A domain controller have been recently demoted and then promoted for a new domain. On this server, Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 was installed Sharepoint. I've created the three missing groups: WSS_ Admin_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG, WSS_WPG.

I've also followed these instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934838 and thanks to this link: http://blog.tylerholmes.com/2008/03/restoring-shared-service-provider-admin.html, I was able to restore the SSP.

Office documents does not open in from the sharepoint site with forms based authentication

Scenario: The client machine is using Windows XP. Office 2007 is installed. The internet facing sharepoint site is running. In that site we have document and report library. There are .doc,.docx,.xls,.xlsx documents saved in these libraries. Forms based authentication is implemented on this site and we are using IE6 . The site is secure and the SSl is enabled. when I take the cursor on any of the files I can see the drop down arrow. I expand this arrow and see the option :"Edit in Microsoft office excel". When I click on it I receive the following message box:

Content Query web part problems

Hello,

I have been having some problems with the content query web part and I am hoping that some of you may have some ideas on what to try. So far I have run into the following three problems.

1. First off, trying to filter by scheduling start date and scheduling end date doesn't work at all. If you set that filter then it simply returns nothing. This has been mentioned before in articles such as this one http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/01c8b5d0-e820-4676-ab5c-63e0cddd117f/ . In other articles that I have read that a common work around for this is to filter on 'Approval Status' since item scheduling will automatically place an article into the approved status on the scheduling start date, and will place it back into draft on the scheduling end date. (I really do not understand why it was done that way)

2. Filtering by 'Approval Status' appears to work, but it really doesn't work completely. If you can contribute to the site/list (where the news article resides) then filtering works fine; however, if you filter by 'Approval Status', and someone with 'Read' only permission goes to the site where the CQWP is, then they can see articles that are in draft or pending status. This means they see all of the old articles since the brilliant method of item scheduling is to automatically set the approval status to approve/draft on the schedule. I think the problem here is that people with Read access do not have permission to view the 'Approval Status' column, but they do have permssion to read all of the list items and the CQWP does not handle this.

3. My last thought was to try and filter based on Article Date greater than [Today-30]. However, date fields do not allow volatile functions in the CQWP settings so that doesn't work either.

One thing I would like to know is if any of you have the same problems as #2? This is one that I have not seen a solution to, probably because most people don't think to sign in with a user that has 'Read' only permission to see what happens. Also, our SharePoint system is on service pack 2, so the issues have not yet been resolved in any of the current service packs.

As mentioned in the article linked above it is obvious that others are having the same problem as #1. Work arounds involve exporting, modifying and reimporting the CQWP to get some kind of descent use out of the web part. Anyone else frustrated?

My portal is set up to allow Anonymous access to users outside of my domain so they can browse the portal sites.

However, the Anonymous users do not see the same data as those that authenticated users see.

The Anonymous users don't see all records say for example in a list, but when signed in and authenticated all records in the list will show up.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure what is causing this or how to resolve this. I checked all permissions, and I did a stsadm.exe -o sync to see if that might resolve the issue. I'm stuck at a dead end. I do have some custom workflows that work against the list, some of these workflows show up for Anonymous users while others don't.

I would appreciate any guidance on this if possible.

FBA not rediecting to default page and no message

I have configures FBA for one of my sharepoint sites and everything is set correctly and when I am opening a page its showing the login page
but here comes the probem
I gave user as UserName as phani and passwors as phani@123
but its not redirecting me to default page.
I configured user phani as site collection administrator from central administrator.

Please do the needful.

I'm getting the warning message below on one of my application servers that's in a MOSS farm. The farm consists of 2 WFE's, 4 app servers, and a SQL 2005 instance. I'm new to this warning, and need some help! It is recurring every 3-4 minutes. I couldn't find anything on the web regarding this one. Does anyone have any suggestions? Everything else appears to be functioning fine in the farm from what I can tell.

Best practices for installing Standalone Sharepoint server with AD Integration?

Hi,

I have tried to Install MOSS 2007 on a windows 2003 server running SQL Server 2005 and I have failed everytime to get the active directory integration working correctly, either the server fails to recognise any account in the domain or the people picker does not work.

I would like to ask anyone who can help how to setup each of the accounts that sharepoint asks for so that I can rule out my setup.

My setup is as follows.

Windows 2003 Server running SQL Server 2005 + all pre req's

We have a an AD Forest that encompasses 6 domains (I hope my terminology is correct). I wish for my sharepoint server to be able to use accounts from any of these domains.

1) The first account I am asked for on install is the Database Access Account , I have read the following and I would like to know if it is correct?

Important: This account is the Office SharePoint Server 2007 service account under which several Office SharePoint Server 2007 services run. The user account that you specify as the Office SharePoint Server 2007 service account must be a domain user account, but it does not need to be a member of any specific security group on your front-end servers or your back-end database servers. However, the user account that you specify must be a member of the following two SQL Server security roles on your back-end database servers: Database Creator and Security Administrator. It is recommended that you follow the principle of least privilege and specify a user account that is not a member of the Administrators group as your Office SharePoint Server 2007 service account.

Is the above correct and if so does the domain account have to be in any specific domain?

Can not edit discussion board item when Office SharePoint Server Publishing is active

We use MOSS 2007 on a Windows Server 2003 64-bit machine. When I go to an existing Discussion Board and choose Edit Item from de dropdown menu I get an unexpected error. If I turn off cutomErrors and in the web.config I get the following execption information below.

I found the following threat: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/68c52fd4-cea4-4712-8af6-db60eedca71e which looks a bit similar to our problem, but we did not install hotfix 941274.

I discoverd that this problem only occurs whe the Office SharePoint Server Publishing feature is active.

Bug in OOTB SharePoint Calendar

when too many items are added in the same day/week you can't display in the Calendar View.

Ex: by default, 2 more items to see (collapsed). When clicking on “2 more items”, only one appears and 1 is still collapsed. But if we keep on clicking on “1 more item”, nothing happens and the last item isn’t displayed.

We have installed the WSS and MOSS updates on a couple of our dev servers. The install seemed to be clean. We then ran psconfig without error.

With some regression testing we find that most things are fine (I haven't actually tested the "fixes" yet), but custom pages that we have deployed in the "_layouts" folder are getting an error:

"Cannot complete this action. Please try again."

This is accompanied in the log with:

"ERROR: Failed to OpenThreadToken, LastError=1008
ERROR: Failed to OpenThreadToken, LastError=1008"

I can create a very simple new page that seems to work. But ones that make reference to the masterpage - don't.

I found references to trying <identity impersonate="true" /> within web config, but this hasn't worked.

New Connection in SSP wiht FBA

In SSP "User Prifile na properties" I have to create new connection to SQL DB on which I have my FBA users.
As a type of conection I can see only "AD", "LDAP", "BDC" and "AD Resource". No DB or something.
Does any one know how to do it?

Audience and FBA

I have to configure Audience for web with FBA. I configured SSP corectly and it's working with user from FBA, but I have problem with Audience.
When I go to SSP -> Audience -> Create audience
First step goes correctly, but problem starts in step two.
I need to define rule: User memeber of group. When I type group i create in sharepoint, peoplepicker don't recognize it. It also not recognize when I type role from FBA. (but if I tried rule: user reports under user, and as user I type user from FBA it's recognized).
What could be the problem?

We already have a MOSS site in our organization (say Site A) that has user profiles imported. We are now about to create Site B.

Is there an option in MOSS to make our User Profiles in Site B to point Site A's data? We want to reduce data redundancy etc.
