August Cumulative update (or later) and a site that has been exported/imported causes access denied to edit.aspx pages
If you have the August Cumulative Update or later cumulative update installed and you export a site and import it into a Blank Site elsewhere, you will no longer be able to create a survey that uses Survey Branching.
The issue occurs only after the August Cumulative Update for WSS and MOSS is installed. Subsequent cumulative updates (such as the October or December CU) do not seem to resolve the issue. The steps that I followed to replicate this issue are as follows:1. Install the Microsoft-released VHD for MOSS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=67f93dcb-ada8-4db5-a47b-df17e14b2c74) and attach it to a virtual server.
2. Create a new SharePoint site collection.
3. Install the Infrastructure Update for WSS and MOSS (KB 951695 and KB 961297)
4. Install the August Cumulative Update for WSS and MOSS (KB 956057 and KB 956056)
5. Export a SharePoint site collection using the stsadm command: stsadm.exe –o export –url http://<yourportal>/sites/sitename -filename c:\export.cmp –includeusersecurity –versions 4
6. Create a new site collection using the Central Administration GUI. Select the Blank Site template.
7. Import the export.cmp file into the new site collection using stsadm: stsadm.exe –o import –url http://<yourportal>/sites/newsitename -filename c:\export.cmp – includeusersecurity –updateversions 1
8. Browse to the imported site, and create a new survey.
a. Populate the survey with at least 3 questions.
b. Leave the survey questions at their default, just changing the question being asked.
c. Once 3 questions have been added, click Finish.
d. Go back into the survey properties, select the first question from the survey, and enable branching to the other two questions.
9. Take the survey. When you answer the first question and click Next, you will receive “Access Denied”.
I recently discovered another issue along these same lines - if you are at your site that has been exported/imported after the August updates were installed and you create a new Announcements list (probably true of other new lists as well), you can add new items to the list, but you cannot edit any of them - you receive Access Denied.

- David,
We are having this issue. Did you ever get a resolution (either through a private hotfix or something in SP2 or a later update)? - Yes. This is fixed in the February 2009 Cumulative Update, so any sites that are exported after that update is applied will not have the problem. To fix any sites that currently have this problem, you have to compile some code in Visual Studio and run the code on your SharePoint server. Here is a link to the blog that contains the code: http://blog.njpenterprises.com/archive/2009/01/18/permissions-problems.aspx I have the executable code if you'd like it. Just let me know. Otherwise, if you're not comfortable following the instructions in the blog, you can contact Microsoft support regarding this issue and they will provide you with the same code. Since it is a bug, the charge for the support call will be refunded.
- I actually have SP2 installed and April Cumulative update installed. I have not installed the August or any other Cumulative updates. Still when i make new list I get the access denied when I try to edit the list - I can add the items and I can edit in the datasheet view as well and I can still edit old list.
Please help.
Thanks in advance This issue is introduced by the August cumulative updates. If you did not have that installed, is it possible that you would have installed a hotfix around that time? It might have been a hotfix that was included in the August updates. You should also check to see if now that you have SP2 and the April updates applied, that you can export a site, import it, and still edit the items that you create. If not, then you are probably experiencing a different issue.
- I did the export/import still no luck.
Ok. I'm sorry for going back and forth, but I want to make sure this is correct.
On a site that has never been imported from somewhere else (like a newly created site), create a list and add an item to it. Verify that you can edit that item. If that works, then export the site. Import it to a new location. See if you can still edit the item. If you can still edit it, then the updates did resolve the issue for all new exports/imports. If you cannot still edit it, then you are experiencing a different issue.
If you cannot edit it after exporting a known working site, go to my blog post of this issue: http://www.sharepointblogs.com/share-a-pint/archive/2009/03/11/bug-edit-aspx-pages-survey-branching-and-more.aspx and send me your email address as a comment to the post. It will be sent to me for moderation so everyone won't see it.
Thanks.- David, thanks for the help. But Microsoft sent me the fix. I showed the support person this thread and he said this was the exact fix he sent me. So once againg thanks for all your help.
