Updating list item fails in custom list : permission issues

  Hello Team,

  I have a seen a lot of posts related to the issue "error updating a list item : unknown error" however havent been able to find a resolution specific to what I am facing.

  My issue is as follows :

  • I have created a custom list in MOSS 2007
  • On this field , there is a 'Status' field(choice) , 'StartTime' field(date and time) and 'Deferred' field(yes/no)
  • I have created SPD 2007 workflow 'ClockStart' which gets invoked on change of list item if the 'Status' field is 'Open' and 'Deferred' is '1'
  • The workflow 'ClockStart' upon invocation just has to set the 'Deferred' field to '0' and the 'ClockStart' to current date time

  During several runs of the workflow, I have noticed that some instances succeed where as some others fail with message "error updating a list item : unknown error"

  I also observed that for items that I have created, if I effect the conditions for the workflow invocation, the workflow succeeds, however if the user creating the list item and the one invoking the workflow are different, the workflow fails.

  I thought the issue could be due to permission and so I have given "Contribute" permissions to all the users, however the issue still persists.

  Can anybody help me out of this ?
