Can I setup my own personal SharePoint site for testing code?

I just installed Office 2010. I have MS SharePoint Workspace 2010 installed. I don’t really have a web site, other than some space on a server, which is here:
I’m wondering if I can set up a SharePoint site to learn the ins and outs of this technology. I’m not currently working in an office. I don’t have access to any SharePoint site, per say.
All I want to do is test some VBA and C# code; importing, exporting, automation scripts, etc.
Can someone show me how to setup a SP site with SP 2010?
Thanks everyone!!

Critical Path Training has a guide to help you build a SharePoint virtual machine available for members. It is free to sign up.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info, Dan. I just signed up for an account. Where do I go to set up the ‘SharePoint Virtual Machine’. I saw something about downloading 'Download and Configure the Windows Server 2008 R2 Evaluation VM'. I am running Windows 7; I don't think I want to download Windows Server. Do I need Windows Server to run SharePoint? I was hoping to just find a test site where I can upload some files, using automation scripts, download some files, modify files, etc. Is this possible w/out downloading and installing Windows Server?
Thanks again!!

Setting up on Windows 7 is also possible. Check out this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869.aspx
Hope this helps,

Monday, March 19, 2012 4:00 PMThanks again, Dan. Setting up SP on Windows 7 sounds like a great option! I googled around for the 'PrerequisiteInstalle.exe tool'. I didn't find anything useful. Where do I get this tool from? I didn't find it on the web, and I don't think it is in Office 2010. Or, is it?

It's part of the installation package you get when you download the SP bits.
Hope this helps,
Dan

Well, I'm delighted to say that I almost got this working. First, I downloaded the file from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/confirmation.aspx?id=5970
Then I followed the instructions here:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/44210/Installing-SharePoint-Server-2010-on-Windows-7-x64
I used VS 2010 to edit the xml file, according to the steps in the second link.
Finally, notice, IIS must be installed. Follow the instructions here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725762.aspx
Now, after everthing installed correctly (at leats it seemed to), I'm up to the point where I have to pick a virtual site, or UNC, or whatever it's called. Here are a couple screen shots.
I tried to enter several UNC paths into the 'Location'; I tried to set up folders on my laptop. Nothing worked. Where do I go from here?

Hi ryguy72,
The problem is that the Windows Identity Foundation pack was not installed. This can be fixed here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=eb9c345f-e830-40b8-a5fe-ae7a864c4d76&displaylang=en#filelist

Thanks for the help everyone! Much appreciated. I think I am almost there. just one last hurdle (hopefully last one). SP is asking me to login, with a username and password. I actually have NEITHER. How am I supposed to login?

Have you tried logging in with the account you were logged in as when installing it?
Hope this helps,
Dan

Hi ryguy72,
When you install the SharePoint, you would get a step to specify database access account, you can use the account to login. If your configuration database is hosted on another server, you must specify a domain account.
See the following link "Above: Choosing whether you are creating our adding to a farm":

I have 'Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010'. It comes with Office Professional Plus.
Maybe I don't have the 'SharePoint' that I thought I had. -

That is client for SharePoint, not SharePoint itself.
SharePoint Foundation can be downloaded here:

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 4:03 PMYes! I did download and install this (about 170MB):
I figured, that, in conjunction with my SharePoint from the Office 2010 suite, would do the job.....
Check out this screen shot:I clicked the 3rd item, under 'Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products'; it is called 'SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard'. I followed the steps here:
http://epmcentral.com/articles/ps10/ps10installstep6.php
I was never prompted to 'create a new server farm' though. Maybe that's the problem!!
Right after setting up the Server Farm, I see some stuff about creating a username and password, but only in the link above...I never get prompted for that!!
Anyway, when I start the wizard, it just starts up and runs straight to the end of the process; 'performing configuration task 10 of 10'. It just rus straight through to the end, and then says 'configuration successful' and then it opens a new tab in my browser. In the address bar I see only this 'http://excel-pc/'; the entire screen is pure white, with nothing else displayed, whatsoever.
When I click 'SharePoint 2010 Management Shell', I see this:

I just uninstalled and reinstalled the SharePoint Foundation 2010. I was expecting to see this:
I actually DID see that window; I selected 'create a new server farm'. Then, I was expecting to see this:
I actually DID NOT see this window. I guess that's the problem. I doubt this will run on Windows 7. I followed the instruction here:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/44210/Installing-SharePoint-Server-2010-on-Windows-7-x64
It still doesn't work. If it's not up and running by the end of the day, I'll just walk away from it. I don't want to spend too much more time on this, when I have no idea if it will work or not (so far, it's not looking good at all). This was just for fun anyway.

As it turns out, someone on another forum gave me a suggestion.
Create a new user Administrator account under Control Panel -> Users Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Manage Another Account.
For the benefit of others, you need to go through all the steps I listed above, and then setup a new account, as an Administrator. That is the final step. Then, login, when prompted, and you'll see your sparkling new SharePoint site.
Everyone's contributions helped. Thanks to all!!!
