    Hi,

We have a SharePoint installation for one of our clients with external access enabled using https via ISA server. When accessing the portal internally within the intranet/domain its fine. In case of external access using https when users login to portal adn when they try to open a MS Word (or any Office) document they are prompted to to enter their username and password again. It happens for every MS Office document. We are using MOSS 2007, Office 2007. I know that the promp for re-authentication is is due to the fact that office try to open a new session but is there any work around to overcome this.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Kabad

    1. Add the site to your Intranet Zone (Tool-> Internet Options -> Security)
    2. Select Intranet Zone, click on 'Custom level...', scroll down to the last option and select 'Automatic logon with current user name and password'
    3. Select the option 'Remember password' the next time you get the prompt.

This should resolve the issue at least for windows XP.  I have seen cases where you still get the login prompt for vista but the document will be opened even if you hit cancel.

Thanks vksampath, This didn't resolve the issue because I am logged into Windows under a different account. Select the remember password option helped to have to user name password auto filled but the prompt is still there every time I open the document. any other suggestion??

What is the operating system you are using?  Can you please double check (1) the User Authentication Logon setting (option 2) to make sure that you have selected 'Automatic logon with current user name and password' and not 'Automatic logon only in Intranet zone' and (2) the site url is properly added to Intranet Zone (for this, you have to uncheck 'Automatically detect intranet network and manually add the site using Advanced option)?

    Hi vksampath,

Sorry for not getting back to you as I was off from office. The users are using Windows XP SP2. I have made sure that all the settings are as per your suggestions but still not luck. I am waiting on our client as he is going to do some more testing and will get back to you then.

    Thanks for your help.

The re authentication is because you have logged in to the PC as a different user and trying to open the document using another user name. If the user logged in to the PC has access to the share point site and if single sign on is enabled it will not prompt for re authenticate.

Opening MS Office documents from our public (anonymous) SharePoint site also requests authentication.  Any thoughts?
