I have a master page question.

I am sorry if I am asking very stupid questions.

I think I am confused about master page.....

I created a site collection and customized masterpage for top page.

And also created some sub sites under that.

How do I use my customized master page for these sub-sites?

Do I have to upload my customized masterpage at the master page gallary on each sub site??

I am asking this because I got error when I just select my customized master page at the site master page settings on sub site.

If I have to uploade it all of sub sites, how do I manage to maintain my customized master page?

Everytime I change sometihng on my customized masterpage, it should  be uploaded to sub sites again and again?

■SiteA(I have customized master page here)

     - Sub- site1

        - subsubSite1-1

        - subsubSite1-2

     - Sub-saite2

        - subsubSite2-1

        - subsubSite2-2

    Please help.

For the sub sites you have already created:

Go to Site Actions - > Site Settings -> Master Page

(If you do not see this option under Look and Feel section then Activate "Office SHarepoint Server Publishing Infrastructure Feature" at site sollection level - Site Settings->Site Collection Features)

Set your custom master page as default master page & check the checkbox for Reset all subsites to inherit this Site Master Page setting (Make sure you've already uploaded the custom master page to master page gallery).

Now if you create a new sub site then you can go to Site Actions - > Site Settings -> Master Page (Under Look and Feel) and then select option Inherit site master page from parent of this site.

    I hope it helps.

You inly need to set that subsite inherit the master page of its parent. You can configure it in Site Settings > Site Master Page Settings

    Hi Arakuza,

The masterpage that you have created only need to live in the top level of the site collection as you can set that all child sites inherit from the parent site once they have been created.  However, the problem comes in when new subsites are provisioned as MOSS does not automatically inherit the masterpage / theme.  **weird I know.

Anyway, here is a post by a colleague of mine that will illustrate how it can be done automatically:  http://technicallead.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/apply-sharepoint-themes-automatically/

    Hi Arakazu,

Where have you saved your master page? I would advise that you have the file saved in the _catalogs area in your site, make sure that the filename is xxxx.master.

When you go the the site home, go into site settings in the Site Actions menu and change the default.master to your custom one, tick reset all sub-sites. This really should solve the problem.

Read the MSDN article, it's got lots of info: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms443795.aspx
