In Sharepoint list, i have a column define as multiline text. I want to know, what is the max character limit in multiline text, and how can I increase it to unlimited text?Abhijit Sil
Monday, October 18, 2010 5:09 PMDocument libraries and lists have different options available w.r.t to the multiple lines of text column type. In document libraries, when you create a new column of type Multiple Lines of Text, you get the option to select the ‘Allow unlimited length in document libraries’ checkbox.
But, In lists, this option does not exist.
A multi line text field is defined in sharepoint as a 'Note' type, this is stored in the the DB as a ntext sql type.In the SQL type can store 2gb of char data, that's 1,073,741,823 characters.
Also, it is not advisavle to store such huge data in sharepoint column as it may hamper performance.

Is this limit also what cuts off lookups in SPD workflow emails, to 250-255 characters, even though you may have set unlimited in the document/form Library?
I have a problem where the lookup in a resultant email, from a SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflow will not show all the data that is in the Document Library in that field, and abrubtly cuts of the field displayed in the email.
