QuestionCan't create Sharepoint task via Outlook

I have connected a Sharepoint task list to my Outlook using the "Connect to Outlook" option. However, if I try to create a task from Outlook, no matter what I put into the "Assigned To" field, Outlook gives me the message "Microsoft Office does not recognize "Person X." I am guessing that it is looking for my name in my Outlook contacts,  but I assigning it to a Sharepoint user. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Try using their email address instead of their name.

Thanks for the reply. It does create a task if I use the email address, but in the task created it doesn't use the correct Sharepoint username of the person whose email address I entered. For example, I type johndoe@gmail.com into assigned, and the task item ends up being assigned to "johndoe" rather than "John Doe." I would also rather not have to put someone's email instead of their actual name. I should also mention that if I leave the "assigned to" field blank, it also will create a task item. I just can't enter a Sharepoint user name and have it work.

IS your Outlook connected to Exchange Server 2007 or higher?  If it is, if you default address book in Outlook set to Global (to look at Exchange server)?
