Questionthe document could not be checked out to your local drafts folder

    Hi all,
I'm suddently getting this error when attempting to check out and edit documents in a document library - any document library:

"This document could not be checked out to your local drafts folder.  The document may have already been checked out, or the local drafts folder could not be written to."

When the dialog is closed, the document is shown as checked out to me but it isn't in the SharePoint Drafts folder.  After that, I can open it for editing, but it still does not appear in the folder, but saving any changes and subsequently checking it in when closing the office app seems normal.

As far as I know, nothing has changed to cause this problem.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

    David

    Hi David,

Have you checked that your MS Office settings still point to where you expect them to? (ie the local /SharePoint Drafts folder) Can you still add a file to your local SharePoint drafts folder using windows explorer?

To check MS Office settings in Word

Office Button > Word Options > Save Tab.

    Hi Paul,
    Thanks for the response.

Yes, I did check that and even deleted/recreated the folder and pointed office to it using the procedure you describe.

    Any other suggestions?

Have you tried to go over the document and check it back in?  and  make sure the file name doesn't have any illegal characters in it like ",?,!

    Hi David,

Is the url of the file you are checking out quite long? I just came across this thread, and it reminded me that I had this exact same issue a while back. At the time I did a test to see exactly how long a file url could be before it throws this error, but I can't remember now the precise number! It seems to depend on whether spaces are converted to %20's.

    Hope that helps

    Paul.
