Remote Desktop won't start as free memory is less than 5% - let's troubleshoot...

I used to be able to launch remote desktop on the internet from the remote.servername.com website, but now when I click the button, nothing happens. After coming back to the intranet, I could RDP in, and in eventviewer I saw an event (I paraphrase) that since free memory was less than 5% remote sesion could not be started.
Since this used to work normally, and nothing significant has been changed, I wondered what might have changed. It's an 8 GB RAM system, and at the time it would have been running typical SBS stuff: IIS, sharepoint, exchange and SBS console. I ran memory diagnostics, which found the RAM working normally.
So, how to solve this? I'm hoping to correspond with a technician to narrow down and fix the cause of this - perhaps some unknown process that is consuming memory. Please let me know any tests to run to identify and address this problem.

Buy more ram. You have both SQL and Exchange who live to suck up ram.SBS 2008 or 2011? As 16 gigs is much more recommended.IMHO 8 gigs on 2011 is not enough.- Marked As Answer by Clarence ZhangModerator Monday, March 11, 2013 9:30 AM

Got it!
Still, one wonders what occurred in the background that would have suddenly made this limitation apparent, given that it all ran fine for years before. Yes, I'm referring to SBS 2011.
Given my interest in an azure VM as my next server, I don't want to invest further in hardware, so what about taking a slimming approach to the burden. I'm using more cloud functionality now, so rather than more ram, couldn't I just uninstall the memory hogs?
I still need SQL and IIS, but can let go of email and any sharepoint websites except companyweb and remote. Is it realistic to run all the other sbs functions (iis, redirected folders, connect, remote desktop through the website at remote.server.com) after removing Exchange and non-central SharePoint?

I would disable the services and not remove them.- Marked As Answer by Clarence ZhangModerator Monday, March 11, 2013 9:30 AM
