I bought Windows Server 2012 Essentials thinking it would be easy to setup.  I did not know it was going to install active directory by default.  I am replacing an older server with a new one and it does not need active directory, it just uses a workgroup setup with file shares.  This is for a very small company with 8 users.

I went to uninstall the active directory throught the Server Manager but all of the check boxes are grayed out and I am login as the Administrator.

Can I get rid of Active Directory in this server version?

I like this new server software because of its user backup and VPN built-in features but did not know that I would be stuck with active directory, the client does not want or need to login to the server, mainly to share folders and access scans from there scanner.

I also have a text mode in the lower right hand, I guess since I had to use a un-signed drive it puts this message there, how can I remove this?

No you cannot remove active directory from Essentials.

You dont have to join the client machines to the domain when installing the connector if you dont want to.

You would probably be better suited to using Windows Home Server 2011.

I bought this software online through newegg, most do not take back opened software and I can not afford to eat this cost myself, do you know if MS will exchange this for the older version?

    I very much doubt it.

Home server is about $50 though so, if i were you and you really couldnt make 2012 work, id loose the $50 out of your labour cost.

WHS 2011 at Newegg is only about $50 US for OEM. Is that edible?

     Proposed Answer

Straight and blunt answer "If you bought this on a website from a reseller it's the responsibility of the reseller to do it for you. If a product is bought though microsoft partners channel microsoft will provide you options for exchange or whichever is applicable is available.

Moral of the story  person who sold this to you is the best place to contact.

I read a lot of articles and videos and it seams I can leave active directory alone.  I just need to figure out how to setup using a local IP issued by the router instead of a domain and I will be set.  I have a static IP address but have the router setup to use it and route VPN traffic and set DNS for all computer plus the old server which is mainly used now as a file share server.  I am setting up a new server to do files sharing and pc backups and maybe the use of the built-in VPN feature.

Ok I'll bite.  What's problem does the company have with logging on to the server? Windows Server Essentials has a number of benefits including security, remote access etc (see benefits page here - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/windows-server-essentials/benefits.aspx).

Have you thought about going through the benefits with them?  8 workstations is more than enough to warrant a full domain controller setup.
