    Hi,

Is it possible to migrate users from windows 2003 STD to SBS 2011 sbs console? I tried to change the info.xml file for the sourceserver but then the console crashes constantly.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ivan,

In the base the migration is the same as migrating from sbs 2003. You have to prepare your windows 2003 server and install the sbs 2008 in migration mode.

You can use the standard microsoft document from sbs 2003 tot sbs 2011: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=52b7ea63-78af-4a96-811e-284f5c1de13b

Or here you can find an alternative description of migrating from windows 2003 to sbs 2008

    Hi all,

These doccuments are all well and good and over the weekend we attempted a migration from MS server 2003 R2 to SBS server 2011. We ran all of the pre migration checks, created the answerfile made sure we had backups of everything and started the migration.

It appeared to work, both servers are on the domain, the new SBS2011 server is now holding the operations master roles.

After a small glitch with the SBS controll pannel we hit the button to start the migration, only to be told the following:

"The migration wizzard only supports migration from Windows Small Business Server. For more information , including supported versions and minimum requirements see the migration guide."

Even though SBS 2011 is 2008 R2 the new facade that they have given it appears to make the migration from std to SBS fail. If I try and remove the new SBS server from the domain (re-allocating the op master to the old server) then the domain does not function so we can not remove the new server and do a completely new build on it creating everything from scratch, and when we do get a chance (next weekend) to kill the domain every service will be down until the new domain is up and running and all of the workstations are back on the domain.

Is there a way back from the migration back to the single 2003 STD server managing the network so that we can take the new server away and still have the network standing for the meantime?

    Thanks for any help,

    Rob

I belive that all migration documents starts with backing up the source server first. If you have a valid backup restore it on the standard server and unplug the new server from the network.

If that is not possible ensure roles are with standard server (or transfer , seize them back). Cleanup the active directory http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498"

and clean the dns manually for the refrences of the new SBS , if present.

You can manually run all the processes in the migration wizard. We did this for a 2003 std to sbs2008 and got evrything working.

The old server has so many issues that we have decided to kill off the old server and start from scratch to not carry any issues over. However for next time (and there will be a next time because none of my clients will upgrade their server untill it crashes every other day) What processes does the wizzard start and where can you find them outside of the migration wizzard?

    Many thanks,

    Rob
