Network connectivity

System Setup:
System 1 (local area connection 1)
Time Warner cable internet into>Belkin wireless router(direct connected) to>AMD/Asus motherboard with onboard LAN using XP Pro 64 Bit {Good Internet}
System 2 (local area connection 2)
with Intel/Gigabyte motherboard with onboard LAN using Vista 32 Bit direct connect to AMD/Asus motherboard LAN
also AMD/Asus motherboard has Rosewill PCI wireless card installed to gain access to Printer {No Internet Conflicts}
Installed Cat5e cable between system 1 and 2. Setup LAN connections on both systems using Network Wizards. System 1 reports on local area connection "limited or no connectivity". System 2 recognizes "unidentified network".
Tried to run network troubleshooter to no avail. Checked other forums - recommended windows patch for XP. Could not install said patch.
Should I set static IPs? Any suggestions?
Thanks
