Have previously used Server 2003 and Exchange 2003, migrating to SBS 2011 is proving a major learning exercise.

Regarding Updates, Windows "Check for Updates" says things are up to date.  And yet if I select "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update", I am presented with what appear to be valid updates.

In the SBS 2011 Standard Console, Security, the Updates tab, I also get a list of Optional Updates, many of which appear relevant to my server.

This may be a silly question, but should one apply these "Optional" updates?

    Hi,

There are different kind of Optional Updates, these are Service Packs, Update Rollups, New version of for example Internet example, etc... these updates can have a lot of impact on your server, installation of Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 will take about an hour. Updates Rollups or Service Packs for Exchange will bring the Exchange service down during installation. Service Pack for SharePoint needs manual pcsonfig action after installation.

Also because SBS is an highly integrated solution the update or service pack for one product can have negative resolution on an other product. So they are indeed recommended to install but automatic installation could bring you in to trouble, it would be wise to wait a couple of weeks and follow the product team blogs and this forum to see if an update can give trouble.

Small correction . Service Pack1 for windows 2008 r2 is never an optional update   it will show when you scan through (Windows "Check for Updates").If this is a new installed server by default settings are as below

anything apart from this (example exchange service packs , office updates , .net new versions or updates) falls under optional updates.

Many thanks, and sorry to have to ask, but can you tell me where to access the Update Levels dialog which you showed please?  I've looked at Windows Server Update Services, but may be missing the obvious.

BTW, I'm hoping to see a major improvement in performance when I double memory to 16 Gb tomorrow.  I suspect some of my problems are due to this lack.  We've only 5 Windows 7 Pro workstations, so it's hardly a big system.

Many thanks to both of you.  At last some things are beginning to make sense.
