I currently have a 2011 Sbs server in production and almost an identical server i purchased for A. if my sbs server goes down and B. to test windows updates before i install them on the production server. I took a bare metal backup and restored it to the backup server so i can install the updates and check out how things go but when i do it activates again and i don't want it making my production non genuine. So i was wondering if this is an allowed practice to check updates?

This forum is for SBS 2011 Essentials and it looks like you're asking about SBS 2011 Standard. If so asking in the other forum may bring you better response. I believe what you're proposing violates the EULA so is probably not an allowed practice.
