I have a problem of my own making which I cannot seem to resolve
You can read the story (below if you want some background)
I have no instance on my computer, I do have data but no apparent means of getting to it
Can I create a new named Instance in 2008 R2 Express?
or
Is there another way?
Story:
I created a Database in SQL 2008 R2 Express and distributed it to a client
Client returned the Data to me for modifications
In the meantime (and I have no idea how) I ended up running Version 10.0 [2008] instead of 10.5 [2008 r2]
Hence, the clients data would not load
Assuming I had installed some older components I re-installed 2008 R2
Then panic set in
renamed MRU list
Deleted all previous files and locations
The net result is that I have a blank MRU list in a new 2008 R2 and no way of creating a new instance that I can seejnc

In the absence of any info
I am going to install the trial version of 2008 R2 create a new instance and hopefully it will leave the instance intact when I remove the trial version or replace it with a Developer version

hi,
are you reported with exceptions when you try to install a new SQLExpress 2008 R2 instance?
what do you mean by "blank MRU"? the combo box of SQL Server Management Studio when you try to connect to some instance?
what did you delete?

Thanks
Yes, I re-named SqlStudio.bin this got rid of the list but I was not able to get to any instance.
I did what I said and installed a full trial version which allowed me to easily create a new instance, I am getting the developer version which I should have done in the first place

hi,
the "combo box" of the "registered" servers should not be a problem even if empty... you just have to type in your desired instance name to connect to it... the list shoul be repopulated..

Saturday, March 31, 2012 7:51 AMYes I know but I was in a state of panic and trying new and ever more bizzare combinations of Machine \ instance the list was becoming unmanageble, it was best just to clear it and start again
