    Hello,

I'm running Windows 2008R2 \ SQL 2008R2 and have successfully setup my Alerting to send out via email (not NetSend) yet I am seeing this error in my SQL Log Viewer:

[364] the messenger service has not been started. NetSend notifications will not be sent

I'd like to suppress this error if possible.  I've done some research and it appears that there's no Messenger service in Win 2008 so how do I get rid of this?  Thank you for your help.

    Hi KAlexH,

You can ignore it if there is not any manager service configured. Here is a similar thread: The Messenger service has not been started.

By default, the messenger service is disabled on Windows XP and Server 2003 as a securiy precaution. In most cases, this is a good thing. Unless you clearly understand the implications, do NOT start the Messenger service.

My advice is to disable Windows messaging for any SQL Agent Operators that have Windows messaging enabled.
