    Am I correct in saying that with Merge replication there is only one distributor. Why is that.

    The reason for this is Merge uses triggers and tracking tables in the publication and subscription databases to synchronize changes between publisher and subscribers.  The distributor plays a smaller role in Merge compared to Transactional or Peer-to-Peer, only storing metadata and synchronization history.
