Security Update for SQL Server R22 Service Pack 1 (KB2716440)
-
Sunday, November 11, 2012 9:40 PMI have SQL Server 2008 R2 Installed on a laptop running Windows 7 (X64) SP1. Windows Update is recommending update KB2716440 but I get an error 84B200001. When I ask for details I get an obscure description that says "...cannot update file in use..." I tried taking my most active db offline, but the error persisted. When I examined the forum entries, I came away with a confusing assortment of possible problems and no coherent suggestions. So, I hope someone is willing to work with me to drive this issue into submission. I guess my first question is what is this update and how important is it? If it is trivial, I suppose the best solution is to ignore it and hope that the next update (presumably cumulative) will resilve the problem. Anyway, I appreciate any ideas you are willing to throw my way..................Phil Hoop

Stop SQL Server on your laptop before launching the update install.
It's most probably trying to update SQL Server engine binaries

Have you tried stopping the antivirus and SQL before launching the update install?

Hi Phil,
Any progress?
You could try to install SQL Server 2008 SP1 manually. Download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26727.
List of the bugs that are fixed in SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2528583?wa=wsignin1.0. That whether you installed SP1 based on your need.
If it still fails, please post the error messages in %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\.

Thanks.

Maggie Luo: I got pulled off on another project and just returned to the SQL Server problem. Anyway I downloaded SP1 and tried to manually install it and this failed with very minimal information. So in an attempt to leap-frog the problem, I downloaded SP2 and attempted to install it which also failed. However I got a summary log with a little more information First it gave me the path to the log file which I opened and printed all 503 pages. I wasn't able to interpret this file after a brief attempt to read it. But the summary log also gave me a url to check (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=Setup.rll&EvtID=50000&Prodver=10.50.4000.0). This WEP page explained: An attempt was made to install (or update) SQL Server Native Client on a computer where SQL Server Native Client is already installed, and where the existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi.
The advise it provided was: To resolve this error, do not install SQL Server Native Client from an MSI file that is not named sqlncli.msi.
My problem is that my complete SQL Server installation was made from a single file that I downloaded from my Microsoft Action Pack account. How do I get myself out of this predicament? If possible, I would prefer to avoid a complete uninstallation and reinstallation. Thank you for your continued interest and support.................Phil Hoop
