unable to upgrade sql instance from 2008 to 2012
-
Friday, February 08, 2013 9:00 AM
Hi all!
I'm having a HUGE problem, that I was unable to solve browsing the web.
The problem is bigger than this post, in short I messed up my lync 2013 upgrade, and now need to publish my topology to the sql server used by the 2010 pool.
So, here's the deal:
I've managed to upgrade successfully SQL server 2008 to 2012 enterprise edition.
But when I check the version of my instance, it's still the old one.
So, after the upgrade, when trying to publish the topology on lync server, I get this error:
Error: SQL version is not high enough. Minimum SQL Server must be major version 10 and minor version 50 and build 1600 (2008 R2) or higher. This SQL Server is major version 10, minor version 0, and build 5500.
I've tried to follow the steps according to this technet article, but got no results.
Also, I've tried using SQL dump, but still no results.
Can anyone help me out? :)
Cheers,
Andrey

Hello,
The upgrade was not successful. At this time you have an orphan SQL Server instance. To troubleshoot this issue please read the following post:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/baliles/archive/2012/04/27/how-to-fix-a-failed-sql-2005-2008-r2-or-2012-install-upgrade-mssqlserver-inactive.aspx
Hope this helps.

Hi!
It sure helped, there was a time that I could not run the "upgrade" option.
After following the post suggested, the sql upgrade ran, but I got into an error:
If I'm not mistaken, this was the same error I got when trying to upgrade it the 1st time!
I must confess, I have no SQL knowledge, usually I follow documentation online.
You have any clue on how to solve this?

Andrey

Hello,
I found the following warning and error:
MsiExtension.GetDiskCost: Warning: No matched disk size is detected for feature ALL_VSHelpLP_Cpu64_1053 and directory SystemDrive(01) 2013-02-08 15:36:52 Slp: Sco: File 'D:\redist\DotNetFrameworks\x64\dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe' does not exist
About the error, I would try reinstall or repair .NET Framework 4.0, and then run SQL Server setup again.
About the warning, I have never seen that warning before, but hopefully solving the issue with .NET Framework 4 we can proceed with upgrade process.
Hope this helps.

Hi Alberto!
Sorry for the late reply, for I've been busy troubleshooting this!
I've fixed all errors regarding .net, I uninstalled .NET Framework 4.0 and installed .NET Framework 4.5
However, when trying to upgrade it, it still fails.
Please find below the summary.txt and the link to the detailed file.

Hello,
The upgrade process failed. Setup is requesting to execute the following command and then run setup again.
setup /q /action=uninstall /instanceid=MSSQLSERVER /features=SQLENGINE,FULLTEXT,REPLICATION,AS
The error 0x84BB0001 means access denied. Probably the upgrade failed because of permissions issues accessing resources like the Registry, files, etc.Regards,

Hi!
After chatting with MS support, I finally solved my issue:
Backed up SQL DBs
Uninstalled SQL 2008
Fresh Install of SQL 2012
Restored SQL DBs
Well, I had to create a new fresh server because I couldn't uninstall SQL 2008, but it ends up the same way.
Hope this helps someone!
CHeers,
Andrey
