High priority: neither SSMS or VS 2010 "packages" can load. Windows update?

Last week we were notified that one of our developers could no longer start SSMS ("Package loading error") or VS.NET 2010. We could not track down the issue. Today we received a notice from another dev that the same thing has happened to them after they installed Windows Updates. Is this happening to anyone else?
sql 2008, vs.net 2010, win 7

Try to repair SQL Server 2008 using the following procedure. This may fix SSMS.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646006(v=sql.100).aspxTry to install the latest service pack for SQL Server 2008.
