All, I was having issues with the installed instances of SQL Server (I could not install a required security update). I attempted to repaire but could not, so put off a full uninstall untill I got a IE crash which meant I subsequently had to deal with the SQL Server problem.
Now, I cannot re-install. I don't have a very recent image and want to try and avoid a full restore. The message I get is durring instillation and it crashes the installer
"TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ------------------------------ SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: doc. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------"
This is more than likely a regestry problem, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help me resolve this please?
Thanks for your time.

Detail message why uninstall failed should be there in Summary.txt file in this folder location: ...\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log , please see error message and paste it here.

Thanks very much for your help here but none of the steps have worked.
I might resort to a clean install... :'[

i would rebuild it in the following steps:
1) use start up command and rebuild..(if it is 2008 or higher...)
2) then apply the latest service packs.. and hot fixes..
3) restore system and user databases...
thanks

In the end I had tried all suggestions to no avail. All that was left to do was to restore the OS as i can't work without SQL Server.
Thank you all for your time...
