Unable to reinstall SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2003

Something happened to my dev server so that SQL Management Studio disappeared from the server. I verified the actual .exe was missing, not just a shortcut. So I tried repairing the installation from the Control Panel and received the error below. Then I tried unistalling all SQL 2008 R2 related applications from the Control Panel. I should mention that I also have SQL 2005 installed on this server. When I tried to uninstall SQL Server 2008 Browser and SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files, I was warned that SQL 2005 is dependent on these files, so I did not remove them. Then I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R2 and received the same error below. I have tried deleting the Microsoft_Corporation folder as recommended by others, although my folder was blank. It did not change anything. I have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 as well as Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed. Do you have any advice, other than reinstalling the operating system and starting over?

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hi Alberto,
Thank you very much for your response. However, this is exactly what I tried, and it did not work. I was hoping there was some other method of fixing this problem that would work for my situation. I don’t relish the job of reinstalling the operating system and reinstalling all my development tools again.
Thanks again,
HarpLady

Thanks, everyone for your responses. I originally could not rename or delete the user.config file because it wasn't on my computer. I tried repairing .NET Framework 4.0 from the Control Panel. After that, the same error occurred when I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R2. At that point, I checked for the user.config file again and found it and renamed it to user.config.bak. After that, I was able to install SQL Server 2008 R2 without error.- Marked As Answer by Maggie LuoMicrosoft Contingent Staff, Moderator Wednesday, March 14, 2012 3:07 PM
