SQL Server Data Tools 2012 installation fails

I'm trying to install ssdt 2012 on a windows server 2008 r2, installed on it is Visual Studio 2010.
the installation page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027) said I must have VS2010 SP1 installed. so I checked the windows update (it was a pending update), restarted, and when starting the Web Platform Installer for the SSDT, it failed with the message : "The product you are trying to install is not supported on your operating system".
I then installed the sp1 through the web platform installer since it was a pending update there as well (weird cause I already installed it, I kinda expected a "already installed" message), went on to retry the SSDT install - same failure.
on the third attempt I installed the SP1 from the link in the SSDT installation link above, same weird thing - it installed even though already installed (twice!). still got same error on SSDT install.
restarted, one last time, and still with the same error.
HELP!!
P.S. - the win2008R2 is installed on a VM. could this be the problem?

Hello,
SP1 (or later) for Windows Server 2008 R2 is required also. Please download SP1 from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842Hope this helps.

thank you very much, both your replies point to the SP1 in the win2008-R2. I've installed it, but then (of course) another thing went wrong and my RDP (using mstsc) connection got screwed up - it loaded and failed after login. I've read here that this might happen as a result of an SP install according to: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/87fc497a-27fd-4a76-ab59-ea5fe01c9091.
I followed the steps of changing the "Set compression algorythm for RDP Data", but it still failed. I'll have to wait until the weekend's over so that I could reach the machine and fix this. Don't know how and everyone's gonna kill me for shutting down the remote desktop on this server...
