General DiscussionHow to setup SCE 07 to send an email notification when server is down

    Hi-
Quick question - I've installed SCE07 on server and it is working fine. Even managed to create a custom report and setup Notification + Recipients + Subscriptions such that when a PC restarts, SCE would send a notification email to myself (restarting PC would create a new Event ID of 6009, which I setup in custom rule).
However, I just don't know how to setup another notification for a PC SHUTDOWN or lost of network connection( event ID 6009 would only be created when PC starts up). I do know that lost of network connection would create a heart-beat lost, which in turns create a event ID of 20022 in the event log > operations manager. I could setup the custom rule but notification email just wouldnt be sent.

If there any one out there with detailed steps or a simpler way to achieve this? Thanks

    Regards
    CCT

    Hi,

Here is a thread which may help you out of this issue:

Closed alerts only when a server is unreachable or heartbeat fails
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/systemcentermonitoring/thread/ce7d9767-dd51-4031-b846-91a471e8eeef

For your reference, if the server is Windows Server 2003, try the following steps to override the monitor of "Ping status"

    1. Open SCE console, go to "Authoring" node.
    2. Click "Management Pack Objects" - "Monitors"
    3. Search for "Windows Server 2003 computers", expand to "Entity Health" - "Availability" - "Ping status".
    4. Right click "Ping status" and choose "Overrides" - "Override the monitor" - "For all objects of type:Windows Server 2003 computer".
    5. Choose the override for the parameter name "Enable" and change the override setting to "Enable".
    6. Apply the override.

    Hope it helps.

    Hi Yog Li,

No luck here. Checked and applied the settings you gave above + link provided. Still I'm not getting any active alerts in the monitoring page when a desktop goes down.

I do however, get the alert for event 6009 ( I set this up by creating a custom rule ). This alert is not the most useful as target PC needs to be restarted to generate this alert. What I need is an alert letting me know when a PC dies / miss a few heartbeats.

One thing to note - the installation is new and server was built from scatch. All settings should be defaults.

Any other ideas which I could use? Please let me know if you require more info

    Regards

    Hello,

Sorry to hear it doesn't help. You can contact Microsoft Customer Support Service(CSS) and submit a request so that this problem can be resolved efficiently.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below:

System Center Essentials 2007 Solution Center

    Thanks,

    No luck again Yog Li,

Called CSS but was told that only Gold Certified or ISV partners have access to technical phone support. We are only a microsoft registered partner and thus was redirected back to the forum.

Actually, what I need is very simple:

    1) By default after SCE07 is installed, should "Active Alerts" automatically be generated when a agent monitored PC drops-out of network? ie - no additional settings or creation of "new rule" is required for this to work.

    2) My actual objective is to set up SCE07 to monitor websites and servers of different domain ( ie - external network ). Is this possible? - If so, how ?

    Cheers
    Chris

    Hello Chris,

    1. An agent offline will not generate an "Active Alert". Additional settings are required.

    2. You can monitor a server of different domain if there is two way trust relationship between the two domains. Or you can monitor a workgroup-joined computer. More details are as follows:
