Cannot see overall Hyper-V Server Performance Monitoring details
- Greetings! I'm evaluating SC Essentials, and I'm having a bit of trouble with viewing the Performance Monitoring details (Processor, Memory, Disk, etc.). I'm using a Hyper-V Server (similar to Hyper-V Core), with several VMs, one of which is the SC Essentials trial.I cannot see CPU, Processor Queue Length or Memory usage utilization on the host Hyper-V server, but I do see these on the VMs.I've installed the Hyper-V management packs, and unloaded/reloaded the SC Essentials agent on the Hyper-V server - no difference. The properties page for Hyper-V server does show up with a Management Status of OK - both Monitoring and Deployments and Inventory are OK.Also, the Disk Space usage section is correct, as is the Installed Software section. The problem is visible when I click on any of the links in 'Performance Monitoring'. I only see the performance counters for the VM machines - not the Hyper-V server. If anyone has any ideas on how I can resolve this, I'd love the help!Thansk - Joe

- Hi Joe,
Could you please try to open the same performance view in Monitoring space and check whether Hyper-v server will still not be displayed.
For example, in "Performance Monitoring", there is a performance view called "CPU Performance", you can see the same view in Monitoring space - Microsoft Windows Server - Performance - Processor Performance, can you see hyper-v server here? - Eric,Thanks for the suggestion! I've checked the section in "Monitoring" for Microsoft Windows Server -> Performance -> Processor Performance. I only see the processor utilization for the VM servers - the Hyper-V server does not show up in this list.I also checked "Microsoft Windows Client" and "Microsoft Windows Hyper-V". The Hyper-V performance counters do not show up in either of these. One potential clue - when I go into "Computers", and select the "All Servers" group, the Hyper-V server is listed with the operating system "Windows 6.0". Perhaps that designation is not correctly categorized by the management packs?Again, I appreciate any additional guidance! Thanks - Joe
- Hi Joe,
Please import latest Windows Server Operating System MP from this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=3529D233-5E3E-4B51-8F66-5D6F27005EC3&displaylang=en&displaylang=en
After importing this link, in SCE console - Authoring space - Management Pack Objects - Monitors, make sure relevant monitors (such as processor, memory utilization) has been enabled for Windows server and Windows Server 2008.
Then check the performance counter in Monitoring space. - Eric,Thanks for the suggestion - I did as suggested and validated that the monitors are indeed marked to allow for collection, but there is no change so far.I'll restart the server, and let it run for a few hours to see if anything changes....Thanks again for your help!-Joe
- Eric,Ok - the reimporting of the MP and validating that the monitors are enabled has made no difference. It appears that the Hyper-V server is not detected in the Windows Server performance monitors. The Hyper-V server is detected in the Microsoft Windows Hyper-V MP, and the Server Role View and Virtual Machine View state views are correct. Please let me know if you have any additional suggestions, or if there is any additional information I can provide to help resolve this. Thanks - Joe
- Hi Joe,
Please try to delete this Hyper-v server from SCE console, then re-deploy the agent to it, then check whether you can see the performance details.- Marked As Answer byEric Zhang - MSFTMSFT, ModeratorTuesday, August 18, 2009 10:15 AM

- Eric,Thanks for your help - I've finally been able to delete and reinstall the SCE agent to the Hyper-V server. Now, I see the following:1) I can finally see the Hyper-V server CPU usage - but only on the Monitor - Microsoft Windows Server - Performance - Processor Performance dashboard view. On that dashboard view, I only see the top graph - Processor\%Processor Time\_Total Performance. The System\Processor Queue and System\Context\Switches windows are both blank.2) The Hyper-V server still does not show up in the overall Performance Monitoring graph. The one I'm referring to is located at Computers - All Computers - Hyper-V Server Name - Properties - CPU Performance. The other servers do show up in this CPU performance monitoring window.3) The Hyper-V server does not show up on the Processor Queue Length or Memory Usage links under Performance Monitoring. (Located in the Hyper-V Server properties window).4) Under Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Server - Performance, the Hyper-V Server does show up under the Disk Capacity (Logical Disk\% Free Space Performance window) and Memory Utilization (page file) (Paging File\%Usage Performance window) dashboard views. None of the other windows appear to be collecting any data - for any server. I assume that I'll need to turn this on somewhere, if I want to capture that performance data?Again, I do appreciate your time and assistance with helping me!Thanks - Joe
