Answered Remote Assistance Error - SCE 2010 Beta

When I select a computer from the All Windows Computers group and then click Remote -> Remote Assistance in the tasks menu in the top right, I am presented with a lovely error message that states:

    System Center Essentials

    Application: TaskStart.exe
    Parameters: /task:remote_assistance
    /computer:BillingOffice11.theveranda.local

Error Message: The system cannot find the file specified.

I am running the Beta on a Windows 2008 R2 Member server with full domain privs. The remote machine is running Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 2.

    Any comments?

Please ensure you have the Remote Assistance feature installed. The Remote Assistance feature is not installed by default
(during Windows 2008 OS install), but you can use the Add Feature Wizard within Server Manager to enable it.

I did not have Remote Assistance installed on 2008 R2 server as I would not be using the feature otherwise.

It's not in either of the guides AFAIK and it doesn't install by default. Might want to include that somewhere.

Installing Feature now to verify resolution.

    Thanks!

    That did resolve the issue.

I would make it a point to include something in the documentation or even autoinstall the package as part of the installation process along with IIS. Alot of small to medium size business system administrators are not going to install that feature by default on their servers.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Thomas,

    Thank you for your feedback.

We are aware of an issue where you will see the "The system cannot find the file specified." error message if the Essentials console is launched by selecting the "start essentials console" option when Setup completes.

Do you remember if the this is how the Essentials console was launched when you received the error?

If the Essentials console is started from the Start menu, then instead of a "file not found" error message, the error should indicate that the Remote Assistance feature is not installed.

    Richard,

This wasn't related to the actual launching of the system center essentials console itself, but rather to the launching of the Remote Assistance tool from inside the essentials console under the computers tab.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Thomas.

I often have trouble explaining this. There are 2 cases to look at, and one has a bug that we're aware of, the other should work correctly.

    Case 1:

If the Essentials console is started from the setup wizard at the end of installation, then when the Remote Assistance task is launched from within Essentials, a "file not found" error is returned. This is a bug we are aware of.

    Case 2:

If the Essentials console is started from the start menu, and
the Remote Assistance task is launched from within Essentials, and
the Remote Assistance feature is not installed, then you should receive the following message: "Unable to locate remote assistance. The remote assistance feature may not be installed on this machine."

If when you saw the "file not found" error for Case 2 then there is an additional bug I need to investigate.

Thanks also for the suggestion about installing the Remote Assistance feature during setup if it is not already installed.
