WSUS synchronizing thousands of duplicate RealTek driver updates

When our SCE/WSUS 3.0 server synchronized Saturday July 12 our at 9:30 am it recieved 2542 new Realtek Semiconductor Corp. driver update for Realtek AC'97 Audio and Realtek Semiconductor Corp. driver update for Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller.
Every synchronization since then has also added another 642 to 3160 copies of these drivers. Our server now has over 12,000 realtek drivers listed.
I have just disabled automatic synchronzation so that it does not download any more.
At least several other are also encountering this, see following site:

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 2:14 AMSame problem here, and it is getting annoying
When I saw that there where updates available I just approved them but the amounts of realtek drivers that are now requesting approval is just rediclious.
Now I set syncing on manual but is there any way to solve this problem? -

I've had over 10,000 of these synced to my WSUS server in the past 4 days - this is getting silly. Please advise someone at MS / Realtek. -

Hi,
I'll check if this is a WSUS problem. As a workaround, use the manually synchronization now.

just confirming we have the same issue here on our SCE2007 WSUS Server, 12,000 Realtek drivers for AC97 audio -
Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:11 AMThe question is what causes it, I don't think that it goes crazy on having an machine with realtek hardware in it
There would be many more people with problems, I have realtek hardware in the WSUS server, I don't know if that could cause it but can you guys check if you got realtek hardware in your server?
We should anyway execlude possible causes -

Hi,
For your information, a new article was posted on WSUS Product Team Blog, which discussed the root cause of this problem. So many drivers...
http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2008/07/17/so-many-drivers.aspx
In the short term, we will be making some publishing policy changes to ensure that drivers with a large number of hardware IDs don't flow to WSUS through WSUS/MU server synch. This doesn't mean the drivers won't be available to WSUS - they can still be imported from the MU catalog site (from the WSUS 3 UI, go to the "Updates" node and select "import..."). It's just that they won't flow automatically and surprise those who have added drivers to their synch options.
Hope it helps. -

Sad that over 2 years later I'm having the Same issue with WSUS on Win2008R2
I have 27 thousand Updates! Most all Realtek Audio AC97.

Was there ever any solution to this? It looks like the short term solution was never implement. Well at least not on the long term. :)
I'd happily not update any Realtek drivers ever again if it would remove them from my WSUS install.
Thanks,
Ted

To help reduce the number of unapproved updates I created a new view and then selected all the programs that were not applicable to me or my network. Then simply disapprove all the updates in that view. It’s not a solution but does reduce the number of updates considerably.- Proposed As Answer by xcalaba Friday, May 25, 2012 5:38 PM
