Intel AMT HECI update keeps appearing
-
Wednesday, October 20, 2010 6:15 PMRecently purchased a new Dell OptiPlex 980 from Dell. Core i5 650 with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. After uninstalling all useless software I installed all the Windows Updates successfully only to find one that kept coming back. I have successfully installed this update "Intel AMT HECI V.6.1.0.1042 A02" over ten times. After checking for updates again this one keeps coming back wanting me to install it. There is nothing in the Event Viewer about it either. I have stopped the Windows Update service and deleted the Software Distribution folder and restarted the Windows Update service again. Checking for updates again brings up the same driver update that it wants me to install again. I have uninstalled this driver and gone to Dell's website and downloaded and installed that way but it keeps appearing in Windows Update. Even after going back and stopping the service and deleting the Software Distribution folder again and restarting the service. It still shows up. Please help. Also Googling provided no useful information to fix this. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Hello Caster,
Did you use System Center Essentials to deploy the updates? This forum is for System Center Essentials related issues.
For questions about Windows 7, please use the following Microsoft Forums, which would be the best resource for your question.

Yes we use System Center Essentials to push out all updates. This is a brand new computer, right out of the box, so I doubt the OS needs to be repaired.
Thanks

Any resolution on this? I'm having a similar problem. SCE keeps pushing out a software deployment for XML 6. I've installed it on several machines but it just keeps coming back.

Hello Brad & Caster,
If the update was re-offered, it seems that the update has not been installed successfully. To troubleshoot this issue, please follow these steps:
1. Enable Windows Update debug logging
a. Open regedit and navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
b. Create a New Key called Trace
c. In Trace, create a new DWORD value called Flags with a Data of 7
d. In Trace, create a new DWORD value called Level with a Data of 4
e. Close regedit2. Stop the Automatic Updates service. Navigate to %windir%, find the file named 'WindowsUpdate.log', rename it to 'WindowsUpdate.old'.
3. Restart the Automatic Updates service and run the “wuauclt /detectnow” command on the client to force an update detection cycle.
4. After the update finished, open the new created file 'WindowsUpdate.log' and search the string "evaluated to 0". Please post the corresponding contents here.
5. If any files or registry entries are recorded, check the permissions on them and see if the SYSTEM account is denied any permissions.
6. Delete the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Trace key from the registry to avoid verbose log in the future, then restart the Automatic Updates service.
7. You can also download ProcessMonitor to monitor the background file and registry actions when reproduce the error message. We can check whether there are any Access is denied error from the result logs.

Thursday, March 03, 2011 1:56 PMI guess we have given up on this one. Clearly I have done everything asked of me and yet still no fix or even a little head-way. I guess I got the wrong idea about IT professionals. Solving problems and fixing things is not what they do, at least not in this case anyway. I don't want anyone to think I don't appreciate the help here because I really do. After waiting as long as this though I have no more faith. Sorry folks.

Sorry to hear you're still having problems. If its any colsolation, we continue to get about 1 bad update from HP each month. Some tips I have learned:
- Test the update on a few machines before deploying to everyone - this is especially important on non-MSFT updates that come from HP or Dell.
- Other 3rd party update, especially for Adobe Flash and Java, frequently have problems. I've had to deploy registry removal fixes in order for the install to proceed. This continues to be a massive headache the occupies way too much of my time.
