How to install Dell OMCI using SCE software package

Hi,
I am trying to puch out an install of Dell OMCI using SCE. I packaged the setup.exe file as MSI and try to puch it out but it will not do a silent install. I am not sure what parameters to input to have the software installed silently?

the file is months old and updates past this error have been installed and yet this file update silverlight (KB957936) has continuously reported an error.

the file should have been installed on 20-oct-2008 it's now 17-dec-2008 and whilst installing this update which is classed "important" the operating system downloads the file and is:

unable to find the location where the file has been cached, and upon a search of the system for the same no file is found with any text reference for the same number.

the only suspected error that I have noticed with the system is that after some time on the Internet a cookie search eliminates the "flip 3D view" operating erratically until repairing with a software called "superantispyware" this erratic behaviour is to my knowledge only occurred after the date that the updated file previously mentions was not available for installation.

I do admit that the erratic behaviour of the "flip switch 3D" and it's relevance to the non-installation of the (KB957936) silverlight file is only an observation and I have not checked by any means if the two are in fact linked.

for my assessment of my knowledge in such things I must point out that I have in the past months found and reported a virus that tried to infect my system though an e-mail attachment which "total security will verify" due to have them upload the file from my system and test the same in their lab, returning a positive reply that I had actually found an unknown virus and assisted them in protecting the world from the same threat.

I have taken an IT upgrade and repairs and networks plus course with aimes training here in Auckland after 20 years of self tutoring on computer from 286 to Pentium III and although I knew more than the teacher of that course I failed to pass the exam that was set to make me an official MS IT technician, (something to do more with comprehension than nous I believe,) as the test was a graded test where the more answers I got right then harder the question became.

So sadly I'm unable to charge NZ$140 per hour for my services and have opted to become a "free2use&free2keep software broker for any program I find - test for adware and spyware free criteria and advertise the same on my own domain www.treezone.co.nz

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what this would go under and I am still learning how all this works.

I am the 1st tier tech at 4 places with about 150 clients and 2 servers at each. We have resorted to completely disabling Windows Update to try reduce our monthly internet costs because 608 PCs updating? Even a small 2MiB update becomes 1.2GiB very quickly.

What I would like to know is if there is an application that we can install on our servers (Server 2003 SP2) that could download the updates we want once and distribute them to the XP clients as necessary? And is it possible to allow only one to download the initial bulk (because it'll probably try downloading everything since SP2 :P) and copy the folder to the other 3? What setup is needed on the server and clients? I've tried making sense of WSUS... but I'm getting nowhere. I don't even know if I am barking up the right tree.
And could this be applied to other Microsoft products like Office 2007?

I really hope someone can help me set this up. My boss has tried in the past but got nowhere. So I'd like to pick up the trail and try sort this out.

Any useful information would be GREATLY appreciated.

Any ideas what the error is saying? First it says "Connection to server: PASS" and then "A connection to the server could not be established". I dont know why this is so hard to get working. I set up a WSUS server on my network a year ago and it was a snap. I have taken that server down since I started this one up. I changed the WSUS GPO on my DC (DC is 2000 Server) to point to the SCE server. I am at a loss as to what to do next to try and get this working. Any help appreciated.

Updates are not working

Hi,

I am getting an client diag error of 0x80072efd.

I tried uninstalling Essentials, then reinstalling it, but am still getting the error, though now I am able to collect inventory on the computers.

I had noticed the SelfUpdate virtual directory was not automatically created, so I created it and pointed it to C:\Program Files\Update Services\Selfupdate, but that does not seem to have made a difference.

This is the evaluation version of SCE SP1.

Any ideas?

I am a service center Tech for a small computer repair shop. It is incredibly time consuming to constantly download the windows updates after a system reinstall. I was wondering if anyone knew of a microsoft product that would allow me to scan and install the necessary updates from an external USB drive where I have all the updates already stored?

Hi, Don't know if this is the correct place to post this question.
We cannot activate new installations via our network, we think it may be because we use a proxy server. The question I have is, is it possible to activate MS products on our network when we use a proxy server, if it is could you tell me how to do this.

WSUS Alternate address configuration

I'm configuring a bunch of client computers for WSUS, and have set up appropriate Group Policy entries to point to our WSUS server. The questions I'm about to ask stem from the fact that some of these computers are laptops:

If for whatever reason the WSUS server is unreachable, will the Windows Update client automatically search Microsoft's servers for updates, or will it simply sit in the corner until the WSUS server is available again?
If the answer to number 1 is the former, will it still follow the policies as set in GP regarding installation (e.g. "Download and notify about installation," "Download and install automatically," "It's up to the admin," etc.), or does it have another default setting?

Basically, we want full approval over any update that passes through WSUS, obviously, but we're afraid that if some of the users take their laptops with them, they'll either install and run unapproved updates during the scheduled update time, or even just install updates without our approval in general. If the answer to question 1 is the latter option, we can rest easy. However, if the answer to both questions are their former options, we'll probably specifically request that the admin authorizes the installation before it happens.

Cleaning up unwanted Updates

Hi

Im trying to get rid of a load of updates from my SCE2007 install, i have set it to only download updates for certain servers, and applications. However it had downloaded all updates prior to me setting this up, over 20,000 updates. I then went through the ones i did not want and declined them all, so have what i need now. However after running the cleanup agent both via the GUI and cmd prompt. The disk space for the updates is completely full and no matter what i do i cannot get the disk space down. Currently its 16gb full.

I have looked at the databases that are there and have the following is this right

SUSDB database that is 4gb

Then in d:\program files\SCE\Wsuscontent i have files that combined are 8gb

Is this normal

Guys, I'm losing my mind here. Hope somebody can help me :)

I'm trying to publish updates to SCE using SCUP (4.5).
However, whenever I hit "Publish updates", I get this error:

I tried using a brand new Self-Signed Certificate, as well as a Code Signing Certificate obtained from the internal CA.
I have copied the Certificates to the Trusted Publishers store on the local computer.

It's a single-server deployment, SCE, WSUS and Update Publisher are on the same machine.
I have read all documentation for SCUP & Certificates, and I'm pretty certain that I've followed them accordingly :)

I know that there is a hotfix(KB 923507/ KB 898708) for this kind of issue however these are applicable for Windows Server 2003 RTM/SP1 machines.
The client I'm working on is a Windows Server 2003 SP2 client. In the KB its mentioned that the issue is resolved in Windows Server 2003 SP2 machines.

On the client I've tried all basic troubleshooting like
>stopping AU service and removing the Software Distribution Folder and restarting AU service
>Recreated new SUS client ID and ran wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.

Still did not work for me.
Is there any hotfix to resolve this issue in Windows 2003 SP2 ? Any ideas ?

I am running SCE2007 and WSUS3.0 SP1. However, my updates are not getting to any of the clients/servers. I have verifed that the GPO settings are correct and we do not use a proxy server. Can declined windows updates be brought back into the list?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered elsewhere but no luck with Search....

An SCE 2007 site where an administrator has declined all the Microsoft Windows updates - please don't ask, I couldn't get a sensible answer either.... WSUS is still operating correctly independently but is it possible to effectively 'undecline' updates so that they again appear in the list for selection/approval etc? Maybe even clearing out the updates directory on the SCE server?

Is there a way to set updates to automatically install on reboot? I see download and notify, but I'd like to have a download and install on shutdown or reboot. Or can you make this a default setting? I'd like to set all downloaded installs to take place at reboot. I was hoping for a way to set it with a GPO, but the options don't seem to quite make the grade. The only other option I can see would be to put the updates in a wrapper, which would add significantly to the workload.

I am trying to import an IBM update catalog into SCE.

I found a manual on the IBM site on how to do that with SCUP and then publish them.

I deed the following steps but I can’t see them in the WSUS, to import them afterwards in SCE.

· Import the catalog into SCUP à OK

· Publishing to WSUS à OK

If I open the WSUS console I don’t see them :-(

Pushing Updates

When pushing Microsoft security/critical updates to both windows 2000/XP clients computer, Is there a way I can do the following:

Only pushed these Microsoft security/critical updates to both windows 2000/XP client’s computer between the time of 4:30 pm to 11:30 pm and after 11:30 pm don’t push any more updates?

Also is there a way where I can set something not to restart the computer, even thou some of the updates required a restart? Because sometime it asks the users that your computer will restart when they are in middle of their work.

Forefront Updates are not available since 3rd Aug through WSUS but they are available on security portal..

Hi,
We are using SCE 2007 with SP1 and we are not receiving forefront updates since 3rd August. We tried on our desktop computers to " Check online for updates from Microsoft Update " but so far no luck to get it. We are downloading them from security portal (http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal ) website and then creating update on sce from that package ad pushing it to clients but it's too slow in deployment as compared to what we gets in our SCE server directly from MS.

Is it known issue ..?

if this is a super-noob question, i apologize. i've been reading and bing-ing all over, and i think i know the answer, but i need to be sure.

if i have a client (wxp sp3, for example) being managed by sce (sp1), can i bypass/turn off the updates part of the management and just let wua run as normal? everything i've read tells me no, but my boss wants me to figure it out.

Disable auto-restart for scheduled updates

Is there a way to disable auto-restart after scheduled updates are installed, weather user is logged on or not. There is an option to disable auto-restart when a user is logged on in the Windows Update Group Policy but no option for when user is not logged on. I would like to be able to restart servers in a more controlled manner rather than having them restart in the middle of the day.

SCE 2007 SP1 impossible to deploy simple Office 2007 hotfix?

Hi all.
Maybe I'm doing something way off but we want to deploy an Office 2007 hotfix, more specifically KB970941.
What I've done so far is choosing Actions -> New update...
Tried both with or without /quiet as parameter.
Without the /quiet switch nothing happens and Windows Update just stalls.
With the /quiet switch Event Viewer reports Event ID:20, Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: office-kb971501-fullfile-x86-glb.exe.
What to do???

Update Deployment Report Email Subscription Loses Saved Parameters

I am using SCE's Report Server (SQL Server 2005 Std Ed) web site to set up an email subsctiption to the SCE UpdateDeployment Report (/Microsoft.SystemCenter.Essentials.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.Essentials.Report.UpdateDeployment). You can set parameters of update status (from a set of check boxes) and computer group (from a drop down list). The paramterized subscription works fine for a week of two and then it fails with this error message:

Failure sending mail: Default value or value provided for the report parameter 'LT_Format' is not a valid value.

Through the SCE ReportServer database's executionlog table, I have identified that when it fails, the include status(es) parameters are not being passed to Reporting Services. They have been unset in the subscription...even though no one changed them!!! You can just go ack into the subscription setup, fix the stats parameters and rescheuld the job...which will work for another week or tow.

How and why is this happening? It looks like SCE is running some kind of scheduled job that wipes out subsricption params?

To graphically illustrate the issue, here are two listings of the parameter column from the executionlog table:

The version of SQL Server 2005 is build 9.0.3310 which I understand to mean that I already have the fixes included in the SP2 Cum. Update 2

The machine has been restarted numerous times over that time period, which, of course, resets IIS. Yet, this problem continues to re-occur.

Remember...it saves the subscription OK and even executes it OK a couple of times, then something comes along and blows out the parameters stored for the subscription.

What is doing this and why?

Does anyone know if its possible to manually download all system updates for Windows 2000 or XP at once without going through the Windows Update page ?

What I want to do is to save the updates for installing later on if necessary. So when Microsoft decides to pull the plug on Windows 2000 support I would like to be able to install the updates on a computer which will run Windows 2000. Any other ideas on how to go about doing this ? Thanks

Is there a way to configure System Center Essentials 2007 to use multiple update servers? I want to be able to designate different servers for different groups so computers can get updates from onsite servers and not have to push them across my wan.

Hi, maybe this is two questions but here we go.
Some of the updates for Office 2007 released as of june, 30 is not published for the general public but is available if requested. How do you add these hotfixes - I figured I would add the updates but do official MS updates need any switches for example?
We also would like to add a few Vista updates not available on WSUS, catalog etc. Anyone have a great idea how we somehow add these fixes to SCE 2007?

WSUS move content folder to new drive

Hi

I've just recently started using WSUS 3.0 and want to move my WSUScontent folder as the C: drive is full.

I'm using the following command

C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools>WSUSUtil.exe movecontent J:\WSUS J:\move.log

but get the following message

Content location is being moved. Please do not stop this program.
Fatal Error: The WSUS synchronization service <WsusService> cannon be stopped.

But I've checked and the Updates service is running, I've done a restart of the service and tried again to no luck.

Two folders are created J:\WSUS\UpdateServicesPackages and J:\WSUS\WsusContent but are empty and the log file reports the following

Unable to move content at this time: a configuration reset process is still n progress, please make sure the WsusService is running.

I'm hoping someone has seen this and can help.
