AnswerLive Messenger 2009 Freezes My Machine

After I install Live Messenger 2009, my system freezes as soon as the application is launched. It worked when I installed it on this same machine running Vista Ultimate. I tried multiple compatibility settings and discovered that if I run the application in 256 colors, it does not freeze my system.

I am testing out Windows 7 on a fairly old Dell Latitude D600 that has the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video card. I tried the XP drivers for this card, but with the same result.

Does anyone happen to have any other ideas as to what I could do to resolve this issue? Running messenger in 256 colors is pretty pointless. :)
