Office 2007 - Can't Update
- After upgrade to Windows 7 I ran into an issue with Office 2007, I can't update it. "Windows Update" program says it will only look for Windows update, but not other Microsoft software. When I click on "Get updates for other Microsoft products," it loads the update page and finds 0 updates. I manual install service pack 2 for Office, but I know there are other updates needed. Please help.
Answers
- The only options in settings are "Recommended Updates: Give me recommended updates that same way I receive important updates," and "Who can install updates: Allow all users to install updates on this computer."
There is no Microsoft Update choice, that was the first thing I looked for.
EDIT: Problem solved! Here's what happened. When I installed Windows 7 on my PC I used Windows Easy Transfer. It copied over my XP User Agent data, so every time I visited Windows Update it read my system as XP. So if you are having this problem here is how to check if it is the same, and fix it.
1. In IE8 enter "javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent) ". This will give your current User Data.
It will look something like this: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0)
If you see a line with "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" this is the XP code and the problem. If you don't see this, your problem is not the same.
2. To fix this, and there maybe a easier way than this but I don't know it, is to edit the user agent registry data. To do that go to "Run" and type "regedit" and enter "OK."
3. Once the program runs look for the following entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform
On the right side you will see registry keys. The one you are looking for has this "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)." I found mine in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform.
4. Right click on that key and click rename. Enter this for Windows 7 64 "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0" I don't know what the Windows 7 32 is likely that same minus "WOW64."
5. Restart your PC. Everything should work correctly.- Edited bybob3000000 Tuesday, November 24, 2009 10:36 PMFound solution

- Have you tried getting updates directly through Office?
I have always used the Help/Check For Updates.
I don't know about Office 2007, I am running 2003, but I would think that there would be a similar method in 2007.
FW - Yes I have tried that, it just opens the Microsoft Windows Update site. And that keeps telling me I have 0 updates.
- Hi bob,
Thanks for the post.
Since you are facing issues in updating Office using Windows Update, you may like to update manually.
To do so,please follow the steps below.
1) Go to Microsoft's Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx
2) Search each update code which starts with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e, KB974234)
3) Click the link for the download and then click download and run.
4) Repeat for all the downloads that you are unable to install
5) Run Microsoft update again and click on check for updates and if the updates were successfully installed they should no longer appear in the updates that need to be installed.
Hope this helps

- I think I might have misunderstood your comments. If I run through the Mircosoft Download Center only looking for KB, I get every update possible. When I try to refine the search I only get 4 updates for Office Communicator, SP2 doesn't even show up in the list. There must be a better way.
- Hi Bob3000000,
Thanks for the reply.
You may like to follow these steps.
1.Open Windows Update.
2.Click on View update history
Make sure that you have installed all the updates successfully.
You may also like to check online for updates
1.Open Windows Update.
2.Click on Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
Hope this helps.

- Did you try the Office update? you can find that in any of the office product's options.
- You might need to open an office application and accept the license agreement before it will enable it for update through Windows Update. Just open Word, and see what happens.
- Shanadas - Windows Update site shows zero updates and zero installed in history.
Ayush M - The Office Update button in Office just brings me to Windows Update which shows zero updates.
hsbrown - I have opened Word, Excel, etc an nuber of times since installing it but that doesn't seem to help. However I can't recall ever seeing a license agreement.
I also tried running Office Diagnostic but that found not problems.
- So I have an update on this problem. Apparently when I visit the Windows Update site I'm redirected to V4, which is the XP site. No matter how hard I try I can't load the V6 site that is for Windows 7. Any ideas to to fix this?
- Hi bob,
Thanks for the reply.
You may like to visit following link http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-us to access V6 site for updates on Windows 7.
Hope this helps.

- When I visit that link, the V6 one, I'm quickly redirected to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp.
- What you want is Microsoft Updates.
From control panel open Windows Update
Click change settings
Click the box next to Microsoft Update
Click OK
That tells update to check the Microsoft updates site as well as Windows update.
Also is it possible that you are already up to date? Check your Update history. - The only options in settings are "Recommended Updates: Give me recommended updates that same way I receive important updates," and "Who can install updates: Allow all users to install updates on this computer."
