Compatable Games
-
Sunday, February 01, 2009 5:47 AMSo far, I've loaded up a few games on windows 7 64bit.
Age of Conan - Flawlessly
Pain Killer - Perfect
F.E.A.R 2 DEMO - Great
Evil Genius - Okay... however Installing it freezes up windows Explorer. The game crashes frequently, and at one point I even lost my game saves, for no reason at all. They were just... Gone. The game seems to be laggy, or unresponsive, in mouse/keyboard controls.
*Edit - Adding others descriptions about there games and compatability*
Warcraft III + Expansion - Installs fine despite the autorun program detecting Windows 7 as Windows NT and putting up a notice under the install link stating it is incompatible. It apparently can't get Creative EAX2 to work in the audio settings. I assume this is a driver issue. Need to investigate some more. EDIT: Ok, this isn't a driver issue. EAX doesn't work due to the removal of the hardware audio layer in Vista. Two years later, and Blizzard hasn't patched this yet? :(
Diablo II + Expansion - No problems at all
Starcraft: -Installs fine, but I'm seeing some palette issues on the main menu screen. Haven't investigated fully. Workaround found in this thread
Need for Speed Underground 2 - No problems
Half-Life (Steam version) - No problem. Does not play well with DEP (known issue).
Team Fortress 2 - No problem. Windows Firewall caused some weird behavior when it popped up, which caused the computer to go into a loop where it kept changing resolutions on me (1280x1024 -> 800x600 -> 1280x1024). Broke the cycle by CTRL-ALT-DEL and using task manager to kill the TF2 process. Didn't have any trouble when I tried to run the game again.
Portal - No problems so far.
Left 4 Dead - No problems so far.
Unreal Tournament 3 Downloaded off Steam. - Will not run. Tried to start the executable directly, got the following message: The program can't start because d3dx10_35.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I have no clue how to solve this. They are going to be patching the game soon, no idea if Epic Games is aware of this issue. - Solved by resinstalling DX9.
FarCry 2 - Runs Great
Halo 2 - Runs Great
Football Manager 2009 - Runs, but graphical glitch; Anyone able to confirm?
Fear Demo - Runs great for some, not at all for others. Anyone able to confirm?
BlackHawk Down - Works.
CoD4 - Great
Soldier of Fortune Gold (1999) - Works with tweaking - Elaborate Tweaking?
Hitman Blood Money - Works; Needs to be put into windows 98 compatibility mode or else it will not launch. But works perfectly fine afterwords.
Fallout 3 + HD pack + Anchorage DLC - Working
Crysis Warhead - Works
Port Royale 2 - work without any bugs
Frater - work but have many graphics bugs and is very unstable
Unreal 2k4 - Awesome
Final Fantasy XI Online - Does Not Work with this Operating System
Steam Client - Works
Half-Life: Source - Works
Half-Life Deathmatch Source - Works
Half-Life 2 - Works
Half-Life 2: Episode 1 - Works
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - Works
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast - Works
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition (DX 9 version, DX 10 not tested) - Works
Guild Wars (entire trilogy + expansion) - Works
Warcraft 3 + Expansion - Works
Hacker Evolution - Works
Peggle Deluxe - Works

Sunday, February 01, 2009 5:56 AMHere's what I've tested so far on Windows 7 x64:
EDIT: Restructuring this post so it's easier to determine what works, what needs a workaround, and what's not working
Couple of observations:
1) Despite Win 7 coming with DX11, a good number of games still use DX9. Best suggestion is to grab the last DX9 update from MS Download Center and install that just to be on the safe side.
2) Don't forget that with Windows Vista, MS completely threw away the old DirectSound API. Apparently Creative EAX used this which means a lot of games which had environmental effects and 3D audio aren't going to be happy. Fortunately, Creative has created an application called ALchemy which translates all the EAX stuff into OpenAL on the fly.
What Works:
AudioSurf
BioShock
Bejeweled Deluxe
Bejeweled 2
Half-Life, Opposing Force & Blue Shift (Crashes with DEP activated)
Half-Life 2, Episode One, & Episode 2
Half-Life 2 Deathmatch
Half-Life 2 Lost Coast
Diablo II & Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (need ALchemy to enable 3D Audio)
Heroes of Might & Magic
Heroes of Might & Magic II Gold
Heroes of Might & Magic III, Armageddon's Blade, The Shadow of Death
Heroes of Might & Magic IV, The Gathering Storm, Winds of War
Heroes of Might & Magic V Collector's Edition
Jade Empire: Special Edition
Left 4 Dead
Need for Speed Underground 2
Peggle Deluxe
Peggle Extreme
Portal
The Sims
The Sims 2
Starcraft & Brood War (Need open up the Display Properties control panel item to prevent palette corruption bug)
Spore
Supreme Commander
Team Fortress 2
Total Annihilation
Unreal Gold
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 3 (Needed ALchemy to get sound during Bink movies)
Warcraft II Battle.net Edition
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos & The Frozen Throne (need ALchemy to enable EAX)
What Doesn't Work:
Aquaria
Doom III
Doom III: Resurrection of Evil
Doomsday Engine in OpenGL (jDoom/jHeretic/jHexen)
Multiwinia
(The above games install and run. However, there's something wrong with OpenGL which is causing the display to go crazy, which makes them unplayable)
What Won't Install (16-bit installers don't work on x64 hardware):
Simcity 2000 CD Collection
Simcity 2000 Special Edition
SimTower
SimCopter
Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency
Total Annihilation: Battle Tactics
(For all above: will be creating a 32-bit WinXP VM in the near future in order to get the files + registry settings)
What's left:
DosBox & Legacy Apps
Simcity 3000 Unlimited
Simcity 4 + Rush Hour
Fable The Lost Chapters
Need for Speed Most Wanted Black
Myst Trilogy Collection
Black & White + Creature Isle
Black & White 2
Various Steam Games
Yoot Tower
Leisure Suite Larry 7 & Leisure Suit Larry's Casino
Unreal 2 + XMP
Enter the Matrix
Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto 2
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Need for Speed Underground
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Neverwinter Nights

Sunday, February 01, 2009 6:37 AMhmm well I can't say much about UT3 (dont' have it) I have had missing DX9/10 errors before, ussually just downloading/installing them fixes the problem.
http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=598140
Evil Genius - Game lags up if you alt-tab out of it (in windowed mode, its fairly common issue in most games though). And I think the controls feel a bit 'slow' but it might just be me.
Farcry 2 - Runs great. However the dx10 doesn't seem to improve much of anything? -
Sunday, February 01, 2009 2:20 PMOk FarCry2 and Halo2 run without any trouble.
Going to test new games....
Ah Windows /7 64bit with Radeon 4850 and last catalyst for Vista 64
-
Sunday, February 01, 2009 2:36 PMThe only game I have had problems with so far was Football Manager 2009 on my laptop. It ran, but the screen flashed as if it was having problems with Direct X. However that may well have been a graphics card problem. It does work fine on XP on the same laptop tho.
However, its only my bro that plays it, so I dont really care ;)

Sunday, February 01, 2009 3:29 PMIs everyone (with nVidia cards) running the Windows 7 drivers from the Update site, or running the latest Vista 64 drivers from the nVidia site?
I'm having all sort of troubles with games on this thing!
System specs (zero OC):
Q6600 Quad core 2.4
2GB DDR2 800
nVideo GeForce GTX260
FEAR2 Demo: Blank screen (audio heard). Had it working once, but it defaulted to 640x480 resolution. I set it to 1280x1024 and now only get black screen with mouse pointer (still looks 640x480)
Far Cry 2: Small black screen in upper left corner. Again, audio but no video.
Tried numerous compatability modes, turning off visual themes, running as admin, etc...
Getting very frustrated!
W7 runs so much smoother than Vista, I may end up dropping back to XP just because I dread the idea of going back to Vista's bloat and infuriatingly poor performance!
Any tips? I'm going to try installing the latest Vista drivers and see how it goes...
Update:
Even after trying numerous nVidia driver revs, I was still with little joy on a lot of games... Using the Vista Drivers over the Windows 7 (Windows Update) drivers allowed FarCry2 to work, but still could not get F.E.A.R.2 demo to run at all!
Found a thread in a forum referring to multiple monitor setups (like mine). I disabled the second monitor and all was happy. fear demo ran smoothly. If anyone is having troubles, and running with dualview setup, disable the second screen in the nVidia control panel and it may work out.
MICROSOFT!!! READ THIS AND WORK THIS OUT WITH nVidia! Thank you!- Edited by CyberGar Sunday, February 08, 2009 2:27 PM

Re: nvidia cards... I'm on a GeForce 6600 GT and I'm running the 178.24 Vista 64 drivers since I haven't heard anything good about the 181 series. -
Sunday, February 01, 2009 5:24 PMFrom what I've heard, the new 181 drivers are great on some games, poor on others. Age of Conan I believe the latest Nvidia drivers are better then the w7 drivers.
I have a GeForce 9800GTX -
Sunday, February 01, 2009 6:00 PMInstalled 181.22 Vista 64 drivers and can now play Far Cry 2, but the FEAR 2 Demo is still no joy...
Interestingly enough, on the nVidia website, I chose Vista 64 for the driver version, yet when it installed, it said Windows 7 64 Bit driver accross the top of the installation window... -

I've got a fairly sizable catalog of legacy games, I'm very curious to see how well 64-bit Windows treats them.
yea me 2 atleast 200 games starting from back in the early 90s to date sompthing is missing when a 1999 game will play and a new 1 will not even after updates -
Monday, February 02, 2009 2:11 PMI have installed:

Monday, February 02, 2009 7:04 PMHi,
I'm using the latest Nvidia driver, I used Vista 64 bit used Vista compatability I have a 7800 GTX, the games I've played so far have run well. I know wow runs okay my son's been playing warcraft in win 7, he has the expansions to the game.
The only games I've played are Settlers 10th Anniversary and wild Earth Africa. I'm a digital Artist and have been painting. Bamboo tablet & pen works and painting software. -
Tuesday, February 03, 2009 2:54 AM
I'm using win7 64 and installed unreal 2k4 and it plays super faster then my xp (sweet!) but unfortunately I tried installing Final Fantasy XI online and failed because the installer doesn't recognize this operating system ;.; Don't suppose there's a way around that is there?

Tuesday, February 03, 2009 4:27 AMAside from poor framerates due to my crappt GPU (GeForce 7050 PV, on-board chip-set) I have installed the following without any problems thus far:
Steam Client
Half-Life: Source
Half-Life Deathmatch Source
Half-Life 2 (Orange Box)
Half-Life 2: Episode 1 (Orange Box)
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 (Orange Box)
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Portal (Orange Box)
Team Fortress 2 (Orange Box)
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition (DX 9 version, DX 10 not tested)
Guild Wars (entire trilogy + expansion)
Warcraft 3 + Expansion
Hacker Evolution
Peggle Deluxe
The following have been installed but not yet tested:
Bioshock (retail version)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
As I stated earlier I get poor framerates (7 - 13 fps) due to poor graphics, but aside rom that the games have yet to crash. -

Wednesday, February 04, 2009 8:03 AMSo far I have used 3 games with great success.
GalCiv2 Dread Lords
Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Genesis Rising
None required admin or compatibility modes. They all installed and played very well.
GalCiv2 is a bit slower in updating certain overlay windows, but otherwise plays just as well as in WinXP. -
Wednesday, February 04, 2009 9:39 PMHere's what I've played so far.
Call of Duty:world @ War runs good, both fullscreen and in a window most of the time. However, I do have occasional graphic glitches that require me to shut down the computer and restart to restore textures.
Company of Heroes: works just fine
Call of Duty 4: The game itself works great, but one cannot play online because of a punkbuster issue (Punkbuster will start working on it after Windows 7 is released)

So far I've tried:
*Halo 1. I get really low FPS on multiplayer (especially certain maps, such as Hang 'em High), but it's still better than the major graphical artifacts that Vista gave. Runs perfectly at about 50 FPS on XP.
*Rome: Total War via Steam. Runs great.
*Trackmania Nations Forever. Runs great, even running it off XP installation files (not actually installing it to Win7).
*Sim Copter. Failed to install. It apparently has some 16-bit component. But it requires some pretty severe CPU throttling to run on modern hardware, too, regardless of OS.
Going to try Civilization III at some point soon. It had issues with saving the game files when you told it to save on Vista (it would show up in its Saved Games list, but would not in the C:\Program Files\Civilization III\Conquests\Saves folder and the "saved games" wouldn't load), but runs fine on XP. Similar to what SinisterD described for Evil Genius. I was playing it a few nights ago but rebooted into XP just to be sure I wouldn't lose any files.
Other than that I don't expect any issues, as I didn't have any others with Vista.

Thursday, February 05, 2009 1:20 PMFinal Fantasty XI does work using the downloaded Vista version (tested 32-bit version) of the POL viewer application available on the official FFXI site. You can also install the expansion packs separately skipping the viewer app.
Additional Note: the XBCD application to change the button configuration on the Xbox for PC controller also works. I used the XBCD360v025 version.
The XBCD config is set to go -- you will need to config FFXI to: Button - 1,2,4,3,5,11,12,7,6,9,10,8 (top > bottom) and set movement, camera, menu (d-pad).
I have been running it in Windows mode and haven't had a single problem. I can't say that about the Xbox version which locked-up in Campaign and Besieged frequently.

Sunday, February 08, 2009 1:02 AMgames installed:
Red Alert 3 - fine, no problems... a bit faster than when I ran it on my XP (same graphics settings)
Sim City 4 deluxe - fine, no problems... works better than in XP (same graphics settings)
Sins of a Solar Empire - fine, no problems...
Spore - fine, although running at lowest graphics settings... upping the graphics kinda makes it a bit laggy... maybe its just my graphics crad... hahaha -
Sunday, February 08, 2009 2:57 AMgta 4 runs very well (little bit faster then vista x32)
just few problems during installation, need to run vcredist_x86.exe manually as admin.

Sunday, February 08, 2009 4:16 AMUpdating my earlier post, however there's a massive problem with OpenGL games from what I've seen personally and reports on other sites. Anything running OpenGL is completely unplayable at this point due to this nasty refreshing/display problem which is causing a lot of flicker and large black lines to run across my screen. As I said, I've seen reports of this on other forums.
Games I'm seeing this on:
Aquaria
Doom III
Doom III: Resurrection of Evil
Multiwinia (another user reports the same problem: http://forums.introversion.co.uk/multiwinia/viewtopic.php?t=2535)
jDoom (aka Doomsday Engine, a Doom engine Source port) in OpenGL mode

Sunday, February 08, 2009 7:43 PMFlight sim X works fine & most of the addons for it too

All my Steam games
Stalker clear skys works.

Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:59 PMHi there
Tried WOW - almost doubles the framerate compared to XP on my 8800gts.
Could someone plz. try getting BF2 up and running on Windows7 64-bit, kinda misses my meetings with old school friends inthere.
Also tried most of the games in post 1 getting the same results so no need to repost ;-)
Another thing - my onboard soundcard (a FX2 on a asus maximus formule) got a second wind with better sound and lower resource usage? NICE.
Think this version of windows is a real winner, and i´ve been there through every version since 3.1 (and os/2 before the breakup)

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 7:30 PMWell I haven't had any problems with COD4 or CODWAW but I can't get Tigerwoods 07 or 08 to work both doing the same thing, Looks like maybe a flash player problem.
I can play the single player part but as soon as I try and go online the screen goes black.
You move the mouse around and you can see there is stuff there.
When you control ESC out and put your mouse over it in the task manager you can see it.
I'm using the Windows 7 32 bit

Sunday, February 22, 2009 2:33 PMNot having as much luck as everyone else seems to be having.
System Specs.
Phenom II 940, no OC
HD 4870
4G 1066 Ram
790GP MB
Win 7 64bit install
Working for me:
Eve, premium graphics client
Bioshock
Download Accelerator
Not working so far:
AOC, gives me a BSOD at first splash screen
Warhammer online, launcher never comes up fully, can find under processes in task manager, but that is all
Fallout 3, launcher fails to start up
Red Alert 3, launcher starts up, can patch, go to website, etc from launcher. But start game and it fails, saying I need an internet connection.
Tried downloading a random screen saver. Install program looked successful, but never showed up in list when go to personalize section.
Amazon Unbox goes into an endless loop of asking permission to let through firewall. Haven't tried with protection off yet. -

wow, you seem to have no much luck with the red alert 3... mine works fine... although I have issues playing online multiplayer even before I have win7 and the EA reps seem to have no idea how to help me, too, because I have a weird case.... but other than that, everything was fine.....
If you are running multiple monitors, try disabling one. the FEAR 2 demo refused to work, and I couldn't run 3DMark 06 until I did that, so other games/software may have similar issues.
Seems like a lot of your problems are communication related.
What antivirus/firewall package are you using? Have you tried temproarily disabling these to see if these things work? -
Tuesday, February 24, 2009 5:57 AMOn my system (NC6000, 2 GB RAM, Pentium M 1.5) works fine:

"Rise of Nations - Thrones and Patriots".
Unfortunately I couldn't run "Command and Conquer Generals"... :-((

Saturday, February 28, 2009 6:23 AMVanguard: Saga of Heroes works great under Win7 64bit, under multiple configurations as I and other guildmates are all trying it out.
The Framerate is about 10 - 20% faster, depending on your setup, over Vista64bit.

Saturday, February 28, 2009 8:19 PMI have just one query... I have tried many times to run Call of Duty 5 - World at War, but my game freezes and just doesn't go any where(basic crash). Sunday, March 01, 2009 1:09 AMI've tried Fallout 3 a number of times but the launcher doesn't work.
-
Sunday, March 01, 2009 9:38 AMI've tried all the games I currently own on the 7022 build;
Guitar Hero 3 - Performance reduced, slightly noticable too.
F.E.A.R - Installs and runs fine.
F.E.A.R: Extraction Point - ^same as above
Command & Conquer 3 - Performance reduced, but that's just the SAGE engine.. CPU hungry
Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath - ^same as above
GRID - Installs and works fine.
F.E.A.R.2: Project Origin - Performance is great. Load times are horrific, up to 40 seconds sometimes, whereas XP didn't take longer than 15 seconds.
Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos - Gives DirectX error and NT error when installing, works fine though. Occasional Desktop locks (you load up the game and it keeps minimising to desktop)
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne - ^same as above
World of Warcraft - Performance is great, load times same as XP.. which makes me doubt about all the other games I play.
Red Alert 2 - Performance reduced after a while, but that's because it's an old game. Happens even on XP
Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge - ^same as above
Tiberian Sun - ^same as above
Command & Conquer: Renegade - FPS drops slightly more than XP
Basic Specs:
Duo Core: @ 3.4Ghz x2
2GB Ram
9800GT 512MB GFX

same here... and apparently going online is a problem... RA2 seems to can'tlocate the internet components.. which is installed... ituses registry settings to locate the com[ponents but it seems it can't access the registry to locate the components... but nonetheless, it works fine....
Command and Conquer Genarals (and Zero Hour) works fine, but same problem, online is crippled.... -
Tuesday, March 03, 2009 3:22 PMI think I can say this safely now, any and all game's related to punkbuster will not work if you try to play online with servers that are PB enabled.
Tested:
Call of Duty - Work's great
Call of Duty: UO - Work's great
Call of Duty 2 - Difficult to install, have to go thru the disc manually to bypass the auto launcher. Work's great though
Call of Duty 4 - Work's great
Far Cry 2 - Can play on Windows 7 no compatiblity mode, but suggests running an SP1 package each time you run this application. With Compatiblity set too Windows XP SP2, you will not get this window, but cant play the game on DX10 settings.
This is probably with the most recent update that has done this as well, since I was playing fine on Far Cry 2 PB enabled server's before. From what I also read; PB will not release an update to solve this problem till Windows 7 is officially out. If someone, somehow is playing on a PB enabled server with windows 7 32/64 Bit, please state how you got PB to work since it kicks me out Unknown Windows API Functions constantly. -
Wednesday, March 04, 2009 3:31 AMI am having problem with NFS Undercover after installing Nvidia new driver 181.71 for Win 7- 64 bit. The game can not start. I have tried Nvidia driver for Vista 64 bit but none of them working. The only driver that working is the one from Update center.
However, I have no problem running COD 5, Brother in Arm-Hell Highway and Pure.
System specs:

9600 GT

Had the same problem, used the following workaround and stopped having the API kicks.
Did it for COD4, havent tried the others yet though, but it may still work.
run services.msc
go down to PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB services
on both, go to properties of the service.
on the second tab "logon"
tick the box that says "Allow service to interact with desktop"
apply for both.
should sort the problem out. Works on 32bit, 64bit gave some problems but eventually
got working. -
Friday, March 13, 2009 4:44 AMI have actually had a cursed hard time installing both wow expansions but using "old" workarounds I am past that it seems.
However, for whatever reason I cannot get Red Alert 3 to install. Every time I try I keep getting a 2203 error and I am not sure why. The disk is fine since it installs on my Wife's vista system fine. I can't seem to find anything on it. I have tried to install from disk and from hard drive *copying files to the hard drive that is* and still the same error.
I am running the windows 7 64 bit on a self built:
Core duo quad core 2.5 ghz
with 8GB ddr 2 800
2 Sli nVidia 260

Monday, March 16, 2009 10:40 AMI've experienced some problems with TF2, CS:S and especially Far Cry 2 on my Win7 x64 build 7000. My system specs are AMD PhenomII 940, AMD 780G, GTX 260 core216, Nvidia driver 178.24. Originally, i had installed the Win7 nvidia driver, but it destroyed gameplay on all games. With the Vista driver, Steam apps run great, but FC2 still has issues that make it unplayable. The game just hangs for 30 second intervals at random times, even in the main menu! Windows reported:

but the "search for solutions" app didnt return any results. I tried a reinstall of FC2, but the issue persists. Maybe someone here could offer me some advice? The strangest thing is that this game ran fine under the 178 driver on my old system: AMD 5600+, AMD 690V, gtx 260 core 216, Win7 x64 b7000.

Far Cry2 runs perfectly fine here with video settings as they r. Though mind you trying to change the settings will crash the game, but with using my old profile I had; it did the settings switch for me. Also using the drivers for Windows 7 x64bit from Nvidia (latest ones they released) still no problems. Runs smoothly as well, possibly the video card you have still has kinks that need to be worked out with the drivers and windows 7. I use the Asus Nvidia 8500gt, no issues with the card. -
Thursday, March 19, 2009 5:30 AMOn my Phenom 2 rig, the nvidia Win7 drivers caused lag in all games that went away the second I rolled back to the Vista drivers. As for FC2, I don't understand what profiles you are referring to, but FC2 is completely unplayable. I'm going to try a number of archived drivers later on and I'll report if I encounter anything interesting. I'm still a little upset that my Phenom rig is running worse that my Athlon rig.

Only Running a few, but they are working with out problems
Oblivion
Half-life 2 (fixed my 64-bit hang problems)
Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed
Running 7 64-bit
I have an issue with Oblivion. It runs fine but upon exiting the game, it locks up windows to the point of having to "hard reset" the system. Has anyone seen this issue? -
Sunday, April 19, 2009 6:57 PMI had issues with mirrors edge but a re-install of the game after updating my directx fixed all problems.
win7 - 32bit (tried 64bit and saw no performance increase in any application)
AMD X2 6000+
2gig ram (have used 4gig on previous motherboard but hardware failure meant a step back)
8800GTX
Dual Monitors - 1280x1024
Good Points:
Definate confirmation of frame rate boosts in multiple games over XP + Vista.
Exceptionaly smooth performance when not encountering bugs.
Problems:
Having Dual monitors running in-game caused crash to desktop in Fear 2 and Starcraft.
Games Working:
CS 1.6 + Source
DOD Source
Garry's Mod (working but very slow launch)
Audiosurf
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Demo (working but very slow level change)
Starcraft (working but with colour issues in menus)
C+C - RA3
Mirror's Edge
Games Not Working:
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (It works flawlessly up untill a level change where it hangs at 89%. Task Manager on second display reads 100% CPU useage, No change in RAM data, No disk I/O activity at all. Minimizing to desktop drops the load to 40% and after that no change. Changing CPU affinity to single core increased loading times so much that you can blink and your already in the next scene but there's no change at the 89% hang. Bought via steam i'm convinced that breaks in the download session have corrupted key files so i shall re-download and try again.)
Hope to see some good patches and driver fixes soon because i'm loving this OS. Anytime i see a laptop chugging through a vista startup i can't help but recommend they try win7, it's gonna be a gooden!
Thanks. -

Running with 2Gb of RAM you wont see any difference gaming with Windows 7 x64 as opposed to 32, however Bump your RAM up beyond 4 GB and you will start to see the differences very quickly. -
Monday, April 20, 2009 3:10 AMI am trying to run Links 2003 ver 1.07 on Win 7. It loads fine and starts up, but during play it stops responding. Haven't been able to figure out why yet. I'm running an Intel Q9650 OC to 2.6 and the nvidia 182.50 on a GTX 280. I found the 182.50 to run stable. Also have run the nvidia Win 7 beta driver.
Also running Kyodia Mahjongg & Virtual Pool 3 (latest version) and both are running well. -

Monday, April 20, 2009 9:44 PMNew games tested:
Age of Empires 3 + the 2 expansion packs, working as expected. No compatibility needed. Can't see any performance increase because when I had XP I already have it maxed out
The Sims 2 Double Deluxe, Working as expected, no compatibility needed. Works smoother than in XP and Vista..... expansions not yet tested but they should work fine.
Zoo tycoon 3 + expansion packs, working as expected. No compatibility needed. Significant performance increase.
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, working as expected. no compatibility needed. Significant performance increase.
I'll be testing more games soon...... I still need to borrow some more from friends...... They sure are excited for the release of Windows 7! So they help me test games and applications in it.

and i have the exact same problem in TES : Oblivion (less up to date but same base engine as fallout 3).
I've only had 2 problems with Fallout 3. One the launcher would crash under build 7000 (but worked on later builds) so I created a shortcut directly to the game's exe. The other was using the win7 beta nvidia drivers for my 8800gt would cause the game to crash when going into the VATS targeting system. Using the vista64 drivers fixed that problem. I'm running Oblivion on my IBM T60 laptop with no problems either.
What drivers are you using for what card? It could be a problem with the rendering of the large outdoor areas of the wasteland. -
Thursday, May 07, 2009 5:26 PMi've currently got driver version 185.85 whql (was using 185.81 when i started to write this reply...) for my GTX260, but i tried the older 182.71 drivers as well and they had the same problem.
this seems to a problem that only occurs in the new RC version of windows 7... unless your also using that then it has to be something else.
im gone try to get fallout 3 running, see if that acts the same.
ps Need for speed Pro street works flawlessly
and rainbow six vegas 2 not at all, tried running it in compatibility mode but nothing not even a black screen flicker : /
edit : just played fallout 3 with hd and all the expansions and it works flawlessly.... why wont they update oblivion T.T.... oh well hope a fix apears one of these days
edit 2 : just reinstalled oblivion without any mods... the problem got worse, it now just randomly crashes every 5 min or so : /- Edited by anub1s Thursday, May 07, 2009 7:14 PM additional info

Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance. -
Thursday, May 07, 2009 9:10 PMthe list is impressive, it might be worth stating if any of these games were also played online and if so where they completely successful as a few listed here have been listed throughout the forums with issues on online gaming, rather than just gameplay. It would be good to list issues say for Steam, Punkbuster, Gamespy etc etc I've tried cod, the battlefield series so far and there are issues and I'm not alone.

Not having as much luck as everyone else seems to be having.
I'm writing because I have the same processor and almost the same video card as you. I do have Red Alert 3 working as well as Fallout 3. Have you ever uninstalled them, removed all traces of them from the registry and installed them again? It might solve the problem. I know it's a bunch of work, but those games cost a lot of money, so making them work properly is important.

Saturday, May 09, 2009 9:26 AMI've tried to run Space Empires 5 with the RC. It's completely fried. The splash screen comes up but if I press play the thing goes "not responding". There was an instance when I had to reboot the whole system. The really odd thing is that it ran fine with the Win7 Beta. I tried everything from compatibility options to un/installing video drivers, directX, changing graphic specs. Nothing works and it's really annoying as it's my favorite game right now.

Monday, May 11, 2009 2:44 AMHow did you get X3: Terran Conflict to run it keep asking for the original disk which is in there and not a copy. I'm running build 7100.

Monday, May 11, 2009 3:37 AMYou need the updated Beta drivers from Tages website. They dont work with every drive, hence being Beta, but you can get them from http://www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm
you just have to go to the drivers section to download them. make sure you get either the 32 or 64 bit version depending on which version of Windows 7 you are running. Once downloaded run the exe, it will need administrator priviledges. Once run you should be good to go. Theres been a couple of threads about this on the egosoft forums one i started back in January and a more recent one, and its also mentioned in the copy protection sticky there.

Thursday, May 14, 2009 8:51 PMguys can you also state whether these games were ok to play online, with gamespy, steam and/or punkbuster, its giving potentially false information if by just getting into a game its a success. The games listed above in their online modes I've had nothing but dramas with. Some gamespy, steam, and punkbuster are creating problems and need careful consideration.

Friday, May 15, 2009 9:32 PMIt seems like games running Unreal Engine 1 work.
Deus Ex , which came out way back in 2000, works great. This is interesting because it was terribly lagging in Vista (Ultimate SP1). It was like Vista couldn't keep up and would render the top two-thirds a frame ahead of the bottom third. Win7 runs the game near flawlessly, and even smooths the subtitles' fonts better than XP or Vista.
The Nameless Mod is a total-conversion modification for DX made by fans over the past 8 years; it's unofficial, but was prominently featured in some Australian gaming magazine, earning a 3 page review. It's surpassed the officially-produced sequel. The point is, it pushes the game engine a little harder than the original game with larger maps, more characters loaded at a time, and weather effects not present in the original, and it runs fine too.
I would be willing to bet good money that other Unreal Engine 1 games like Unreal , Unreal Tournament '99 , Rune , and others work just as well. -
Saturday, May 16, 2009 12:28 AMLord Of The Rings works like a dream in DX9 and DX10...but since I have a DX10 capable card, who cares about DX9! :p

Glad I found this thread. Been trying a few games and wanted to share my experience thus far:
Specs
ABIT AV8 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU
4GB Crucial DDR3200
ATI HD 3850 AGP w/ 9.4 Catalyst Drivers (Vista x64)
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro w/ Windows 7 beta drivers
Windows 7 x64 RC
Mass Effect and SW: KotOR I install and run beautifully.
Neverwinter Nights (w/ SoU, HotU expansions) installed fine and looks great. EAX is not available when I would expect it to be (and is in KotOR), but that's far from a deal-breaker.
BioShock installs fine but suffers a serious performance hit using the same settings I had on XP SP3 (everything maxed, vsync off). Same results with DX10 option turned off and in XP SP3 compatibility mode. Turning graphics from high to medium barely had an effect.
On deck
The Witcher
Jade Empire
NWN 2 + both expansions
Titan Quest + expansions
Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition
Civ IV + expansions
That should keep me busy for a while... -

Any online games with Gameguard Hackshield does not work. LOL.
That is incorrect, as Crossfire that uses Gameguard works for WIN7 RC, DriftCity, Gunz the duel and Soldier Front from IJJI.com that use GameGuard dont work with WIN7 because of a unknown error. Unfortunatly Nprotect which is the developer for GameGuard, will not support WIN7 until Microsoft Releases WIN7 as a official O/S.
I have tried many games listed and all seem to work just great others not listed are Project Torque and Live for Speed(LFS) these worked fine.
I play more mmo games but havnt installed them yet as alot use gameguard and im not waisting more time tring to rewrite gameguards code for them.
Hope to see more game support from microsoft as well, WIN7 tried to send a error report to M/S about DriftCity but had an error trying to do so.
If any one knows of a fix to gameguard for DriftCity please post a reply on this forums please.
Happy Gaming to all. :) -

Thursday, May 21, 2009 11:20 AMI've had football manager 2009 working great, really happy with that
Empire: Total War, not too sure, had a blue screen when some graphical problems last night. DIdn't try again, so I'll have to see what happens.

Friday, May 22, 2009 11:37 AMWhat hardware and drivers are you using for Empire Total War? Mine hangs and reboots. I'm not sure which graphics driver I have, I've just downloaded the 185.85 W7 64 bit version, so I'll try that later.

..............Don"t install Trackmania, because Win7 is not working with the SecuROM-driver and it makes the system crash, but before you see lots of windows.....

W7 64 bit experiences:
WORKS---------- Oblivion- Fallout 3- Civilization 4- Microsoft Train Simulator (from year 2001!!!)WORKS WITH SMALL GLITCHES-------------------------------------- Planescape: Torment (from 1999! - crashes when exits, otherwise fine)DOES NOT WORK---------------------- Railroad Tycoon 3 (such a pity!!)- Sim City 4 (crashes during installation)- Rail SimulatorDX9 installed, Nvidia 9800GTX+ w. latest drivers, 4 GB RAM, AMD Phenom II X4-940.
On my copy of Win7 64-bit (build 7100) I installed Sim City 4, then the Rush Hour add-on with no issues (other than it's designed for a standard definition monitor, and therefore looks like a SD TV show on a HD TV). I've also tried Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now. While it installs and plays, there is no sound. :-/
Not sure if this makes a difference or not to anyone else. When I install my games, I do not leave them in the default 'Program Files' directory (or Program Files x86, in this case). I make a directory called 'Games' that I install them in. In this case, my SimCity 4 install is within C:\Games\Maxis\SimCity 4.

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 8:54 AMI start to wonder if I'm the only one with problems playing any 3D heavy application in windows 7.
I remember trying world of warcraft in windows 7 beta - but the game would freeze randomly after a period of time.
Sometimes it could freeze after just a few seconds, and other times after some minutes.
The same thing happens in windows 7 RC.
I remember having problems with CS 1.6 as well, but haven't tested that one in RC yet.
What I've done:
-Fresh install of windows 7 RC
-Installed every update windows could find
-Installed windows 7 RC driver from nvidia // also tested with the driver from windows update.
-Installed NOD32
-Installed world of warcraft
*I've tried to play with both drivers (both from nvidia and windows update)
*I've tested compatibilty mode: Vista32/Windows XP
*I've checked the OS for driver issues, but it seems to be 100% at least in "Device Manager"
-> I recall having a question during installation, that I should "move" the installation folder to a public area on my computer? Why is this?
-> It also mentioned "If your running Windows Vista, this game is recommended to be installed in another location etc....."
Well I ignored to this message, but does this really have something to do with my problem?
I mean, shouldn't it be possible to install wow within C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft ?
Would really appreciate feedback from people having same issues.
Windows 7 is pretty much better on everything over XP/Vista, so far for me - but I still can't figure out the freezing problem when playing games.
And this is basically the thing holding me back atm.
Regards,
<Qck>

Friday, May 29, 2009 3:08 PMThe only game I'm (so far) having an issue with is Rise of Nations Gold.
Someone earlier posted that the non gold versions seem to work fine.
At times splash.exe will fail to load thus the game not always launching. Sometimes patriot.exe simply crashes at load.
If you close the game and try to reluanch it, the game will usually crash at load.
If you can manage to actually get the game going, it runs great.
Another issue I've had is with ventrilo (not a game but related to them).
If you run the game in admin, directinput wont work with cetain keys (such as mouse 3-7). If you run vent w/o admin, you cant even use it as it doesnt pick up the PTT key and using the auto talk function does not work either. This is supposedly an issue with vista as well ( i know a few ppl who've told me of this) but for them atleast the auto mode works. -

Dungeon Keeper 2 - installation ok, compatibility windows xp sp 2 , themse disabled , game starts however If you try to do anything at all, giant black pixels consume the screen and you cant see anything. Friday, June 26, 2009 1:21 PMAfter playing with Dungeon Keeper 2, on multiple computers. I have figured out that it is purely a hardware/driver issue, mostly the video card. On one system AMD Athlon 5000+ running 32 bit and 63 bit with nvidia 7600gt I can run DK2 without any problems, using hardware acceleration, running in windows xp mode and not worrying about any other display preferences. However, on an AMD Athlon 4800+ using Nvidia 8800gt any type of drivers, nvidia or windows, it will only work properly, using windows xp and no hardware acceleration.
Other games,
Peggle Deluxe - had to force window xp sp2 mode
Feeding Frenzy 2 - no problems
QBeez2 - no problems
Theme Hospital - must run without shadows
Inkball - no problems
Microsoft Pinball - no problems
Settlers - works fine, all patches up to 1.05 ; Patch 1.06 ruins the cd check.
World of Warcraft - (issues with saving settings ; after using Homegroup)
Cake Mania 1-2-3 - no problems (2 must run in windows xp mode)

I had a problem with NWN +2 exp (Platinum DVD version)Glad I found this thread. Been trying a few games and wanted to share my experience thus far:
Specs
ABIT AV8 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU
4GB Crucial DDR3200
ATI HD 3850 AGP w/ 9.4 Catalyst Drivers (Vista x64)
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro w/ Windows 7 beta drivers
Windows 7 x64 RC
Neverwinter Nights (w/ SoU, HotU expansions) installed fine and looks great. EAX is not available when I would expect it to be (and is in KotOR), but that's far from a deal-breaker.
I had instaled it with no problem. Than I updated it with patch 1.69. No problem at all.
When I tried to run, it was so, so lagged that I quit. Than I had updated my video driver to NVidia 186 version.
It started to run very fast, in a good quality.
But for nowhere, during the multiplayer game, it simple break and then poped up a message saying that there were occurred a problem with video drive Kernel Mode.
I also allready tried to run with V-Sync off and other changes, like running in compability mode for XP SP2 and Admin, and nothing.
I suspect that is someting that appears in the game screen, like any item or magic used by some player that affect the function off the video driver and crashes the game, but I have no clue about what or how to solve this problem.
My PC is:
P4 2.9Ghz
GeForce NVidia 6200 512Mb AGP
1.5 Gb RAM
Any idea or suggestion?
Is there a chance that using an older video driver version it can be solve?
In vista I could play it very well, without any problem. It never crashed or became lagged. I was using the 185 video driver version. I tried this version in w7, but the problem persists as with 186 video driver.
I had instaled the Dx 11, but I also manually instaled the 9.0c version too. -

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 1:28 PMGames that work for me.
IL-2 Sturmovik:1946
Unreal Tournament 2004 installed from a cd version i have owned for years, and installed the 64bit patch that lets you run it in native 64bit mode. 32 bit version works great too.
Battlefield 2 runs without any issues.
Americas Army 3
Quake live
And despite many reports of punkbuster problems, it works fine for me in Quake live and BF2. -
Saturday, July 11, 2009 5:35 AMI'm not having problems with either Dawn of War 2, or Fallout 3 running under Win7... But I can't get the "Games for Windows" to be able to load my profile/get content/patch under Win7. Verified it works under Vista Ultimate x64, but doing the same thing under win7 x64 is giving me a timeout when trying to fetch my profile (with no anti-virus software installed, with BitDefender installed and set to 'gaming mode'/DMZ, with BD installed and set to disabled.
The Games for Windows standalone client runs fine and can connect to marketplace/log into my account, but I can't get it called from a game and have it work. -

Sunday, July 12, 2009 4:21 PMSo far I've tried:
Lord of the Rings Online - Got stuck in that spot asking for the Directx9 redistributable - and their site suggested clicking on the exe file and running as administrator mode, did this and was able to finish the install. Seems to play fine other than for regular disconnects, which I haven't determined yet if it was an existing connection problem I had before Win7 or new.
World of Warcraft - Installed fine, other than the fact that I had to feed all the disks for original and 2 xpacs manually because when I tried downloading the file from their site, it kept erroring. I had installed this way before Win7 and it worked fine. Game itself works fine including with a bunch of mods.
Sims3 - Kept crashing about 5-10 minutes into the game. Finally ran the compatibility mode thingy and am running it in XP sp3 mode, which it seems to do ok with. Could be my hardware also, but that seems to run win7 ok. Will keep checking it. -
Monday, July 13, 2009 1:17 AMwow, sims 3 crashes on you?

Monday, July 13, 2009 6:00 PMCurrently the ONLY game I can not get to work for any real length of time is Kane & Lynch, it crashes to desktop or just freezes at random points.
I'm using Windows 7 RC1 64-bit.
Games that are working:
Source and pre-Source games seem to be fine
Shadowrun
Fallout 3 (no add-ons yet since I haven't finished the main game yet)

Prey
Gears of War
The Club
Spiderman 3
Halo Combat Evolved
Halo Custom Edition
Halo 2
Flatout Ultimate Carnage
Americas Army 3
Battlefield Heroes (BETA and full release)
Several games in BETA stage
and a bunch more that elude me at the moment, I'll add them later when I get home.
Just Kane & Lynch keeps crashing.

The problem was that I cancelled the DirectX9 install that launched as part of the install process thinking that since Windows 7 has DirectX11 there wouldn't be any trouble. hmm well I can't say much about UT3 (dont' have it) I have had missing DX9/10 errors before, ussually just downloading/installing them fixes the problem.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 4:49 AMThis is pretty odd, but was wondering if anyone has any ideas.
Installed Battlefield 2142 using admin priv and xpsp3 compat.
Game installs, updates run fine, when opening the game exe, the process is to check the CD or DVD it was installed from to check for the game CD. It finds none even though I hear the drive spinning. It was installed using this very same drive.
Second DVD (Blu-Ray) installation same issue.
Log into Administrator account same procedure same result.
download Virtual XP and install the same there, same results.
Any and all CDs, DVDs and BLu ray discs are read and are the correct or same drive letter.
If no DVD in drive it sends a message indicating it was looking for the media in a particular drive letter. A check in Explorer shows the same drive letter when I place the media back in.
In fact there is an autorun function that starts the game is it sees the installation was done. All of this done using the same drive. I can't figure out why this is.
Even in Vista this did not happen.
I have not tweaked my install at all except for appearance, preferring to see how stable the installation is so far. It is the only problem I have had.
I have AnyDVD installed, but have neutered it for this test.
Running Kaspersky IS 8.xx, but a neuter and even uninstall of that too gets me nowhere.
I found a similar thread that mentioned Tages drivers (compatible with rc7).
downloaded them, uninstalled ANYDVD just in case, installed the tages drivers, still no luck.
Does anybody have a clue where I can look to resolve this?
I see nobody has listed BF2142 as having been working yet.

Monday, July 20, 2009 9:08 PMAsus M3N78-VM/Phenom 9750/EVGA GTX 260. Running x64.
(newer) Games install/run fine:
Bioshock
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Witcher EE
Tomb Raider Underworld (Demo) Might buy FV
World In Conflict (Demo) Probably not
Timeshift (Demo) Neat concept too clumsy, already own 2 Crysis thank you-Deleted
2 Older games I still play regularly:
Axis & Allies (Timegate/Atari) -- graphical issues under XP were initially more pronounced with win7 and would occasionally CTD; between MSFT & Nvidia somebody addressed in a recent update, now runs good.
Vampire the Masquerade:Redemption (Nihilistic/Activision)--Installer croaks regardless of compatibility mode.
Copied program folder from XP partition to x86 folder.
Import Win2000 registry keys available from Activision support:
https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_admin=1&p_faqid=6158
Manually create launch shortcut to "...\vampire.exe -console", point icon to file "... \vampireAnkh.ico"
Run as administrator, XP SP3 mode. (this game was written for W98/2000, but it likes XP/SP3 mode for some reason)
First run will ask for CD key (as expected).
After all that, runs flawless.
Not sure where it's putting the save/autosaves, but it works.
No patch 1.1 because it disables the cheat console, and no playability issues anyway.
Vampire is a standby/kill time favorite for me, getting it to install/run on Win7 was the one thing that would have held me back
from (someday after Win7 RTM) vaporizing the XP boot partition. -

Im the only one with Cod4 problems?. When launch mp.exe the screen goes black and then return to desktop with this error in eventvwr:

I got the same problem with Cod4 in Windows 7 Beta. I reinstalled the game again, this time with 1.6 but i tried with 1.7 in the past.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.
i get this same thing with build 7100 32 bit. i get a black screen for about 10-20 seconds, and when it recovers it is playable for about 10-20 seconds before crashing to desktop referencing "iw3mp.exe". i think its directx, but i reinstalled dx and my nvidia drivers without any luck. the game is on steam by the way. -

Cant get tigerwoods 08 to run, program loads ok and menu's ok but getting black screen when entering the game to play.
Game loads and runs with Vista x32 OS on same system.
Anyone got any idea's how to cure this ? -
Sunday, August 02, 2009 4:25 PMim not sure what i did. but i partially fixed the problem i was having with cod4. at the time of posting i installed versions of directx from Microsoft sites and installed the latest nvidia drivers made for win 7. then i tried the version of directx that shipped with the game, which was in the steam game directx folder. the black screens are much shorter (1-2s sec), and the game is playable with AA again.

Friday, August 14, 2009 3:30 AMThietavu,
For me, MS Train Sim is not working. I can load it up, I select a route and 'mission', get to the engine cockpit, and the game crashes within 2 minutes (sounds plays, but video goes out and the monitor detects sleep mode). I'm thinking this is a residual problem with the video card I have (nVidia GeForce 9600GT). Can you confirm your video settings so I can match what you have?
Many thanks,
-Ed S -
Saturday, August 15, 2009 6:15 PMfor me the monitor never shut off. it was on but black. if it had lost signal the monitor would have shown me a message that it has lost DVI signal or something and turn off. this was not the case. i was able to CTRL+ALT+DEL and cancel COD4 and all returned to normal on its own.
i have a 8800 GTS 320, latest and gretest Nvidia drivers for Win 7. many games that i play insist on installing its own Directx. what i did was install the Directx for the game in question and it seems to have "reduced" the problem. my monitor is 16:9 res, and i run with AA enabled. i also have 2 monitors installed. my native resolution is 1920x1080 but i play games on 1280 x 720. -

I have this problem with CoD4 Multiplayer. Singleplayer works amazingly well, but for some reason multiplayer loads the half screen thing at the start, then goes to black screen for a few secs then crashed back to the desktop, don't get why at all.

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 9:20 AMDid you try with the mic plug trick?
-
Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:19 AMI have a USB headset /w mic which only gives me CD quality or DVD quality 16 bit in the options.
-
Thursday, August 27, 2009 6:16 AMNo, just try to plug whatever to the mic jack. Can be a usual headphone jack, but in the mic one. Then try to run the game.
-
Thursday, August 27, 2009 3:36 PM(referring to COD5 now) i hear disabling the voice chat in the options fixes all the audio problems, i think its the same with COD4. i think i have fixed the majority of my problems by running steam and the game in XP sp2 compatibility mode. i still get the black screen for a second like COD4 does, but after that the game is playable and will not crash to desktop any more.

Saturday, August 29, 2009 11:39 PMTrouble with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 - Windows 7 RTM 32 bits.
I had a problem with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 a time ago (with one of the beta versions of W7) with the RC the simulator worked fine, but with the RTM the problem has return. As the trouble is with the screen, I have installed older drivers from nVidia, but the problem remains, so I assume is something changed in W7 RTM. -
Sunday, August 30, 2009 12:20 AMPunk Buster and BF2 not playing well together, I keep getting kick. COD4 PB is fixed now. PB said they will support windows 7 once it is out but why just not now? So many people are using windows 7

yep did the same installed Sim City 4, then the Rush Hour add-on, the first time I run it it was find, but now I get a flicker when it starts, can't play with this flicker
On my copy of Win7 64-bit (build 7100) I installed Sim City 4, then the Rush Hour add-on with no issues
don't know if it is the video driver or Win7 that's the problem
All other games I have work great, I too have a game dir under c drive
some game that I have not see here are
Sudden Strike Universe, it has the 1st 7 games in it - all work great, with the install you have to move the .exe's from the code dir to the main dir to work..

If anybody have screen trouble with a game, disengage the Aero. This is the solution for the FS2004 problem and I'm sure for others ;-) -
Monday, November 16, 2009 7:03 PMSomebody please give me the secret to installing Sim City 4 Deluxe on Windows 7 32 bit? I thought the improved XP mode would be able to handle this. I cannot believe I am going to lose one of my few remaining gaming mainstays.
If you know a secret please let me know. -
Monday, November 16, 2009 8:59 PMI have 750GB of games working from wing commander to l4d2 demo and everything in between. On windows 7 x64 ultimate RTM
Works:
most if not all of the problems i had installing fell into 3 categories...
1. required and updated engine like doomsday for doom 1,2,heretic,hexen, and d2x-xl for descent 1 and 2.
2. 16 bit installer... but got around on a couple of games like XIII and Bard's Tale. Just installed in an xp vm and copied the directory over... worked
3. need dx8 and dx9 to be installed.
All in all, just about 20 games could not be installed and working. (none of the popular games). In fact I was able to get NFS3 hot pursuit working also.
I would be happy to share tips if you guys need them. Just tell me the game and I will do my best.
BTw... forgot to add... i have UAC turned off. UAC caused me too many problems. -
Monday, November 16, 2009 9:00 PMsounds like you need to reinstall your graphics driver.... almost all the time opengl does not work is you used the driver from windows update... DO NOT DO THIS. Go to ati or nvidia directly and get the latest driver for your card. The games you have problem with work beautifully on mine.
-
Monday, November 16, 2009 9:57 PMthere's no secret in it. Just install it as is... then it should be fine. I don't know what's the problem you are encountering but I did nothing to make mine work ok. I installed it as is

Monday, November 16, 2009 10:41 PMSo far the games I have tried on win7 32-bit (RC):
Need for Speed: Undercover - Plays better than XP does on my computer, in XP a framerate drop occurs with smoke effects on, yet win7 runs the smoke effects just fine.
Thrillville: Off the Rails - Runs same as XP.
Games I haven't tried yet:
MX vs. ATV Unleashed - On a friend's Vista laptop the menus work fine but attempting to load a level crashes the game. The game box says it is for 2000 and XP ONLY , so will have to see if it works on win7 at all.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 2:31 PMAs I said before, I've found a solution for a serious problem with MS Flight Simulator 2004: disengage the aero. Simple.
Well, I had the same problem with Grand Prix Legends, and I use the same solution.
So, if you experience some display problems with a game, try disengaging aero first ;) -
Sunday, December 06, 2009 5:45 PMyou can change the shortcut to do that automatically... in fact a lot of games that you have to tweak the compatibility settings do this automatically.

Sunday, December 06, 2009 9:09 PMI've just installed Windows 7 x64 for the first time, so I haven't had much chance to try anything, but I will be adding to the list in the very near future. So far though, I can say this:
Doesn't work
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 (haven't bothered with 2 yet) installs, but won't run.
I'll be testing the following soon:
Black and White 2
Need for Speed Carbon
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Need for Speed Undercover
Mirror's Edge
Age of Empires (1, 2 + their expansions and 3)
Dugeon Keeper (don't have much hope for this one
Dungeon Keeper 2
Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion
Prince of Persia (SOT, WW, TT)
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect (maybe)
The Sims 3
Works
Freelancer
Pity that Doom3 doesn't work :-( that was one of my favorite games.
Does anyone know about workarounds I can try for any games that don't work 100%

New games tested:
Age of Empires 3 + the 2 expansion packs, working as expected. No compatibility needed. Can't see any performance increase because when I had XP I already have it maxed out

Age of Empires III does NOT work with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
The error reported is that there is a known compatibility issue and it simply refuses to run.
Things I have not done yet:
I haven't applied the patch.
I haven't tried Compatibility Mode (when installing).
Instead of doing those things, I downloaded and installed the XP Mode for Windows 7. I installed it in Virtual XP and tried to run it, but an error popped up telling me that my graphics card had no memory.
I had a look at the Device Manager in Virtual XP, and the card being reported is a Virtual S3 Trio 32/64!
Looking around in Virtual XP, it seems that the display mode is limited to 16-bit colour.
I will update this info as I rule out possible solutions.
