Windows 7 Offline Files Issue

Hello, I have a laptop with Windows 7 Pro OEM. I need to make a network drive available for the user when they are not on the domain. Here is what I've done so far and the issues I am comming across: (The files are on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition)

I have setup a network drive and right clicked on it an set it to be made available offline.

Windows then starts to make the offline copies.

While in the process of making the files available offline, errors start to appear saying “The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process” (This error Occurs for each file in the directory – 4400+ files)

I have tried this multiple times with the user logged off and also checked the file server to ensure that any files are not open. But still the same error occurs.

This issue occurs most times when requesting a sync. It has occasionally worked correctly. ie. it made a copy of the files

After I have seen a successful sync I unplug the computer from the network and try to view the files.

Each file in the directory has a cross on the icon.

When opening any of the files I simply get a message saying that it cannot open the file.

I have turned off the Offline files and deleted all temp files and tried to setup the Offline files again twice now but still had the same problem.

I have found where the offline files are stored: C:\Windows\CSC\....

I have set the user to have full control permissions in this section but neither the Local Admin or User can access these files. I am not sure if this is what is causing it, but I am unable to change permissions on the folders and subfolders.

Just in case I may be getting confused on this issue... Does Windows Sync Center control / manage the offline files?
I know that some people have had problems with this in Vista as well and most solutions I have found to the issue is to use 3rd party software.
I have Offline files working perfectly on XP machines and vista machines here already. Was there any big changes to how offline files work between XP and Vista/7 ?

Is anyone successfully using Offline files in Windows 7?
Has anyone found it just simple and easy?

Fax & Scan can't see my scanner

Until I started testing Win 7, I used a prehistoric copy of Winfax Pro. It "just worked".

I have an oldish Agfa Snapscan 1212, which works fine with Win 7. I use it with Paint Shop Pro and for OCR - with no problems. "Device Manager" and "Scanners and Cameras" report it as present and working correctly - but "Fax & Scan" insists I don't have a scanner. Since the "Help" screen takes me to Scanners and Cameras which tells me I do, I'm stumped.

I thought of cheating by scanning with Paint Shop Pro, and then faxing a JPEG, but I've been warned that Fax & Scan sends the JPEG as if it were a text file - hence producing a few hundred pages of gibberish at the far end. I'm not going to annoy people by doing that.

I've not tried installing Winfax Pro - yet. It's a year 2000 version, and I'd have expected not to need it any more. Before I do (if Win 7 will let me) does anyone know how to persuade Fax & Scan to see the scanner that's there?

Halo 2 on Windows 7 will not start due to Windows live 3.0 not compatible

Hey guys,
I thought I would post my findings on Windows 7 and Halo 2. My son played the game some time ago on Vista and I thought I would give it a go on Windows 7. All my other games and there are a lot work fine, all but Halo 2. I have tracked down the source of the problem but found no solution other than installing Vista on another hard drive.
When the game is completely installed I get this error message:
Live Gaming on Windows failed to initialize. This may be because another
LIVE Gaming on Windows application (such as the Halo 2 dedicated server) is
running on the same machine. Otherwise, reinstalling the game may fix this
problem.

The problem is not new even to vista and the reason is that when the game shipped on the DVD Live dist file was a mere 1.0..... but now live version is up to 3.0. So the problem it seems is that when Halo 2 starts it expects to load version 1.0 of live and has problems because it doesn't know what to do with version 3.0. So what I did to work out it is an issue with Halo 2 and live was to install Windows Vista with SP2 on another hard drive. I then installed Halo 2 (doing a custom install so it installs fully), and when I went to start Halo 2 to my amazement I got the same error message, "live failed to initialize" That's because live wasn't even installed on sp2. So I went to the Halo 2 dvd and installed the live version 1.0...... redist and then when I started Halo 2 it started wonderfully. It then discovered that a live update version 3.0 existed and updated to that etc etc and it runs fine on vista now.

So where does it leave Windows 7 users and Halo 2 for now. Well install Halo 2 as your FIRST windows Live game and then install windows live manually from the dvd it's under the redists folder and named XLiveRedist1.0.6027.msi BTW this will work for vista as well. Whatever you do don't install the windows live 3.0 redist like I did. After running Halo for the first time and it updating to version 3.0 of live you can install your other live games and they will work fine.

The other thing I have not tried but should work would be to run Vista as a virtual OS but I haven't tried this. I own a few copies of Vista so a second Hard drive was easier.

I have to say that I am surprised that out of all the games I play it's ironic that a microsoft game is the only one that doesn't run for me.

If anyone has any suggestions how to get Halo 2 to log into windows live without getting the error message I would love to know. I have tried the compatibility options etc.

IE8 toolbars - Roboform and Adobe PDF - open only if Windows Explorer is open

This is on a completely fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. Installed Roboform and Adobe PDF Professional, and they both installed fine without any errors. Both toolbars appear fine and work as expected IF I have a Windows Explorer window open BEFORE I open the IE8. If I do not have any Explorer window open, and start IE8, then I cannot see these two add-ons. They are not visible anywhere - on the main page / Manage Add-Ons screen / right-click -> Toolbars link. If I now close IE8, open Win Explorer and then reopen IE8 then both toolbars appear fine again. Any ideas??

And yes I tried deleting all cache / history etc, tried reboots, switched off antivirus (Kaspersky) but still get the same results always.

I installed the application twice.

Double clicking on a photo gives following result:

I am unable to run Aero at all. Initially it was working fine but i can't get it to work any more. Themes are not available. My taskbar is grey. 2.8 GHz; 3GB (RAM); 32Bit; NVIDIA GeForce 6200SE TurboCache(TM) (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)
(updated).

Transparency is not working. I also noticed that Aero is not availabe in the performance options in system properties?? When I ran the troubleshooter, the problems found are: 1. The Current Theme doesn't support Aero - Not Fixed. (There are no other themes available, and this theme which is just landscapes was initially working) 2. Desktop Windows Manager Is Disabled - Detected. (under services.msc it shows desktop manager is active and in automatic).

Quickbooks PDF converter won't work with Windows 7

I upgraded from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. Now I can't email invoices or save my invoices via "Save as PDF" in Quickbooks. I've researched it online and it seems to be a known problem with other W7 but no solution from QBs. Found some user solutions about PDF converter problem but none work.

Was working fine before upgrade. Here's the Quickbooks error I get:

Printer not activated, error code - 20;

then I press Ok and get:

Could not print to printer. Check your printer selection. Printing may have been canceled from another program.

then I press Ok and get:

Problem
Your forms were not sent b/c QB could not create the necessary PDF files.
Solution
You should be able to solve this problem by exiting and restarting QB, and then sedning the forms again. For more information, click Help.

Adobe Flash and Internet Explorer 8 Crashes

Anyone else have a problem with Adobe Flash Player causing IE 8 to crash? The flash player is the newest version (Flash10c.ocx, version: 10.0.32.18). I was on vista 32bit an had this problem. Wiped the hard drive clean, installed windows 7 64bit and installed the latest flash player from adobe. It has caused it to crash 186 times in the last 6 days! I tried unistalling and reinstalling with no luck. I know I can turn it off, but I need it for the majority of websites. Thanks

Windows 7 Beta (x86) & Cisco IP Communicator issue

Installed Windows 7 beta on my work laptop over the weekend to test it out. I am dual booting with Windows Vista SP1 Business, so it isn't permanent.

I take help desk calls, and use a Cisco softphone to take these calls through the laptop (Cisco IP Communicator). I have a regular Plantronics analog headset, hooked up to a GN Netcom 8110 USB adapter. The Netcom adapter installs just fine under device manager under Sound devices listed as GN 8110 USB.

The issue is, when I open up Cisco IP Communicator, and go through the audio tune wizard, it doesn't allow me to choose the GN 8110 USB adapter, so that I can take and hear calls through the headset.

I'm able to choose the GN adapter when I'm using Windows Vista. Any help is appreciated.

windows 7 frequency problems.

Everything is working perfectly on desktop.
I have samsung 120hz lcd.
1680x1050 @ 120hz on desktop.
Im running ati hd4870x2 on catalyst 9.10.
On every game the frequency drops to 60 and whatever my adjustments are it just stays at 60hz.
I have tried to lock my refreshrates with pstrip, reflock, games own options, changing drivers etc...
Any of those wont work.
Didnt have any problems in XP.

im out of luck now...
any help is welcome.

Hello anybody.

When I used XP and wished to alter any file, eg. a word file, on a usb stick I could do as I liked in it and save it while still in the usb.

I could also rename any file on the usb while in XP.

I upgraded straight from XP.

Trying to alter and then save in W7 resulted in a crash of the OS.

This applied, and does apply, to any make of usb.

Crashing also occurs if I use the option to 'make a new folder' on the usb and then give it a name.

On a couple of USBs I removed the files and reformatted them as NTFS. this seemed to prevent the crashes but whether it is a realistic solution is open to question.

I have the 32 bit version of windows 7 Home Premium

My Motherboard is an ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus

Since the problem only occurred after upgrade it doesn't seem likely to be a hardware issue.

I am not in any way an expert on anything so;-

Any ideas anyone? Please!

Okidata 320 turbo .86 drivers issues

I have installed the Okidata 320 turbo just fine. However I'm needing to install the .86 driver

as it is a shared printer. When I try to install the driver it will ask the location on the .inf file.

I don't have any driver disks nor does Okidata.com. They (Okidata) say the drivers comes with win7

standard.. Would love to learn how to get this done as I have several hundred okidata's I need to install on Win 7

Opening Word 2007 document 'Connecting to Printer, Press Esc to Cancel'

Word opens normally, but if I then try to open an existing document, or open a document to start Word, then, in the bottom left corner I get 'Connecting to Printer, Press Esc to cancel'. It takes anything up to 30 seconds for the document to then appear after which I can work on it normally and any subsequent documents opened in the session open immediately. This is on a desktop pc with both printers connected via USB. The issue has only just started happening over the last week or so, possibly after Office was updated. This is a month old clean Windows 7 Professional installation and Office was installed at the same time. It doesn't matter which printer I set as default the problem still occurs. I've checked that I have the latest drivers for each printer (Windows had found them both on installation anyway). The pc is on a home network but it makes no difference if any other pc/laptop is connected or not.
Word is the only program having this problem, Excel opens immediately, as do all non MS programs. There's no indication in Event Viewer of any criticals or warnings.
I've seen this problem listed on other occasions but the problem seems to occur only on networked printers and the fix of changing the default printer to a 'non-real' one is no good for me.
Anyone else had the problem & found a solution?

intellitype pro error code 1603 on w7 64 bit

I have tried everything I can find.Clear temp, uninstall of preious versions (they never actually installed). Installed .net framework beta2 t, tried installing different keyboard choice during install of my product ALL fail with error code 1603 incompatible application(intellitype software that is not something else) it hints that my hardware may be ncomaptible. I have just built it. I7 proc. w7 x64bit, asus vid card eah4890+ just hdd and dvd writer+ reader. no other cards. AVG antivirus v9. Most of the keyboard works except 7my favourites, my docs, my pictures,my music, and messenger buttons and onboard wheel(mouse scroll) current installed driver is 7.0.280.0 . as this is an MS keyboard and a clean install this is a bit annoying-- any help greatly appreciated.

I have reviewed the other posts to the best of my ability and cannot find the "solution."

Had Vista SP2 with Outlook 2003 connected to an Exchange Server 2003 over the internet using Cached Exchange Mode.
No VPN.
Works fine, lasts a long time.

Upgraded (clean install) of Windows 7 Build 7100.
Installed Office 2007.
Cert is good.
Could not get CEM to work at all. Note we have MULTIPLE people off-site doing this (none with W7) so I know the server, firewall, router, cert and all are good.
Took computer to office and put it on the network (not the domain, though). It connected right up and sync'd all my mail.
Took it back home and no go. I have another computer right next to it connecting just fine with VSP2 and O2007.

Strange behavior - when I start Outlook, it asks for my password (as it should). If I type in a bad password, it asks for it again. If I type in the correct one, it doesn't ask again, tries to connect and then disconnects. It attempts that every so often. It appears to authenticating my account but the connection between exchange and outlook appears to fail. Why would it fail over the internet but work locally (I do have the hosts file pointing to the site).

I am getting these errors in the event logger:

I have set up numerous computers using CEM on this server and on various clients. This one has me stumped.

How do I create an account on my Windows 7 notebook that I can use for sharing, but cannot login ?

Windows 7 requires a username for shared folders and I only want to give my work colleagues (running Windows XP in a non-Domain environment - we are consultants at a client site) an account name and password that they can use for accessing shared folders on my Notebook. I don't want a collegue to be able to log into my notebook, only access the shared folders.
How do I set up this account on my Windows 7 notebook or how should I approach this problem?

Time has come, and I'd rather jump off a bridge. I'm IT mgr for 30yrs. I am a whiz on computer, and do things very FAST and EFFICIENTLY - minimum keystrokes, minimum sliding silly mouse around all day. I have dozens and dozens of software packages, some pre-XP (no win install executable) that I manually installed to run on xp by putting files in correct (expected) directories.

Now I know, a bunch of you are shaking you heads and saying, "Get a look at this old broad, she's living in the past." I will use one single piece of software to make my example. In the 90's, I BOUGHT in a STORE, Parson's Address Book. The company was bought out by another, who dead-ended the product several years ago, and told me their 'better' bigger product would do 'almost' everything the other did (SO NOT TRUE!!).

Let me tell you, this Address Book software is the BEST program I've EVER SEEN to keep up with names, phone numbers, fax, cell, business, alternate everything, custom fields, categorizing, grouping, and a full report-writer built in to print it all or quickly selected groups to labels, organizers, full paper, anything you can define, any number of columns or lines, customize every field that goes where, etc. This thing has saved me TENS OF THOUSANDS of hours of my time since about 1998. I've tried to do the same with Access and many personal information manager software, and NOTHING compares to this product. It is JUST what I need and NO MORE, no overhead, no fancy ____. So, I've been using it to collect information for 15 years, think I want to lose all that? I use this software multiple times/day. It loads in 5 seconds. One keystroke takes me to the name I'm looking for. Unloads in 2 seconds.

I got it to run on xp by tweaking, but have no confidence it will run on Windows 7 compatibility mode. Can one go to the c:\programs directory in compatibility mode and MANUALLY COPY a folder and it's subfolders to run their? (because the path is hard-coded into the software, going back to an earlier version of Windows)

Some other things I won't live without and use daily and PAID MONEY for, unless otherwise noted:
Nirsoft METARWeather - freeware - use 5-10 times each morning to produce a report for a website 365 days/year
ws_ftp pro - use about 100 times/day, loads in 3 seconds
NoteTab Pro vs 2001
Photoimpact XL
Ulead Gif Animator 5
Ulead Cool 3D 3.5
Locate 32 (freeware)
PDF Tool 3.5
ATF Cleaner (freeware)
NIYoW - file naming utility but latest version is free - creating 100 new files in 30 minutes every morning, can't live without this

Other things I PAID FOR that likely I'll lose, not all mentioned here, just the favorites:
brainsbreaker (jigsaw game)
PC study Bible (1998)
Quickbooks 2006 and up - some clients on 2006, so I can't upgrade THEIR data while I'm working on it, or then they must

Now lets talk about MS productivity software:
all day long use Word, Excel, but version 2003 - I HATE 2007
The biggest argument against is I have Excel macros for PAYROLL files using Visual Basic Editor, which MS in their assinine 'wisdom' TOOK AWAY in 2007vers
The payroll package took thousands of hours to write, and still works with Excel 2003 - should I rewrite it just because MS doesn't want backward compatibility?
Can I run MS Office 2003 on Windows 7 compatibility pack? (with Visual Basic Editor?)

Fujitsu Lifebook N6010 Drivers for Windows 7

I recently installed Windows 7 on my Fujitsu n6010. Most drivers recognized but I cannot find any downloads/patches on Fujitsu's site for Win7. Does anyone know how to get around upgrading the BIOS without a floppy? Any help is appreciated.

i downloaded a some simple program off the internet and everytime i try to run it it gives me this error. it started with a couple of DLL files and OCX files and i installed those, however after all that was done i got this. any advice?

When attempting to access online Netflix movies on my Win 7 laptop I'm being asked to install Silverlight which is already installed. It results in a message that the installation failed and message id 1514 which then never allows me to access the movies through IE8. I can access movies just fine through Firefox. I know that this is an easy fix because it got resolved one time but then was undone when I had to do a system restore from prior to the fix provided.

Is another person testing FSX (as Flight Simulator X) with Win 7 RC 64 bits?

It seems I am alone and I will be very happy to know other persons testing FSX which is now a simulator near from those which are professional simulators .
For me it's not a game I am private pilot licenced and my whole real flights are done before upon FSX and some addons of the country where I expect flying.

Hey guys! A few weeks ago I had windows 7 beta build 7000 installed on my PC. At that time Windows Live Messenger 2009 worked very fine without a single problem. However, when I installed Windows 7 RC on my PC, I really had problems with WLM 2009.It is performing so poorly in RC I am really surprised since WLM 2009 worked fine with the beta and not the RC. After opening WLM, the first time I try to sign in, I get disconnected and I am able to signin only in the second time. And WML takes so long to respond and I have to wait for around 1-2 minutes before I can even click any menu, button, etc... And when I double click a contact and try to send an instant message, the chat window opens instantly, but it shows a blank screen and won't respond for around 5 seconds. And when I click the emoticon icon to send an emoticon, again WLM freezes, and this time for even longer! I dont know why I'm having these problems with WLM. I even tried reinstalling WLM, but that didn't help. I even re-installed Win7 RC and installed WLM and checked, but still no help. I tried running WLM in compatibility mode for winxp sp3, and it did help a little, WLM was fast and doesn't freeze, but that's sometimes only. Even with compatibility mode for winxp sp3, WLM freezes in about 80% of the times. WLM 2009 seems to be the only program thats behaving like this in RC, I have no problems with any other programs. And one more thing... I installed Win7 RC on my brother's laptop, and even installed WLM 2009. But I didn't have any problem with WLM in the laptop. And ofcourse, I used the same win7 rc and WLM 2009 which I installed on my pc. Guys... Please please please figure out a way to solve this problem. I really need my WLM 2009 to be working fine on win7. Please help me find a solution to this problem. Thanks in advance!

Will Microsoft Office 2000 run perfectly in Windows 7? I've read that it's not possible to update Office 2000 on Windows 7, is that true? Are there other issues?

ACT 5.5 Inventory Collector DCP won't run on Windows XP client - gives a runtime error event id 1008

I'm trying to install the inventory collector DCP from ACT 5.5 to a Windows XP Professional SP3 client computer (P4 3GHz 1GB ram) which is used as a school library computer. It has .NET 1.1, 2.0SP2, 3.0SP2, 3.5SP1 and a whole bunch of other software.

The DCP will install and then a moment later it would uninstall itself and nothing is collected. The app event logs shows several errors:

There is a software called "Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP" in the Add/Remove programs that I suspect maybe causing a problem but I cannot uninstall any software from this PC as it's being used in the library.

I'm trying to get another PC to clone it and then try it out.

Any advice as to why the data collector won't run in this computer is greatly appreciated.

Outlook 2002 problem in WIndows 7

Coming from XPsp3 with Office 2002. Running windows 7 with all current updates. Since there is no longer an "about" in Explore, I do know know where to find the exact version.

Word,Excel, and Publisher installed fine. Outlook will open but every time I open it I have to answer the User Account Control question and then I get a message that an unspecified error has occurred in line 298 character 1 of the script for Outlook Today. Whether I say run it anyway or not to, that box disappears when I click, but then outlook won't operate. The file drop-down boxes work, but when I try any operation, I get "operation failed."

I uninstalled and reinstalled once. Once the computer gave me the option of apply a "hotfix" that would install Microsoft (uh...was it Exchange?) that was not in Windows 7 but was in a former verson and would solve my problem. I did so, but no change.

Also, when I brought over my data via Easy Transfer, nothing installed in Outlook. Once I get this straightened out, can I extract that? Don't want to extract other things and eliminate a couple new documents I've created. I also have it on disk.

Thank you. This is probably the single program I use most and other people seem to have it running. HELP!

this error has only started happening too me in the rc build 7100, the 7000 build was problem free for me but after failed re-downloads of the rc and many re installs I'm resorting to posting here.

so to some up my problem while playing grid, prototype, or grand theft auto 4 my problem starts randomly (usually 5mins - 1 hour) either the dcom service process launcher, plug and play or power service fails and calls for a reboot. after looking under the event viewer i found event 1000 application error ends up causing the chaos.

I have IE8 on a computer with XP. Everytime I launch IE, another application starts up which in Task Manager shows up as a window icon with "-x" after it. If I end this task, a moment later I get the "This tab has been recovered" ( on my Google home page) error and the application reinstates itself. I've checked all the add-ons and disabled all those that I don't need or use. I have Trend Micro antivirus and after a system scan it says my system is clean. I've also deleted and reloaded IE8. Any ideas on what this can be?

the winfast icon is there and will show the screen and control panel but will not recognise the tv tuner card. Have tried to load drivers from the cd but nothing will work any ideas.

Windows 7 Outlook 2007 w/ Exchange 2007 Connection Problems

Is anyone having problems with Windows 7 and Outlook 2007 connecting to an Exchange 2007 Server. After the upgrade I am no longer able to connect to the exchange server that I was able to connect to with Vista SP2 just minutes before the upgrade.

I have verified the mail is there via Web OWA and Mobile 6.1 with the same Exchange Account

All other email accounts connect and download fine, just not my Exchange Account...any help :- )
